About The Faculty of Science and Technology

The Faculty of Science and Technology (REALTEK) develops research-based knowledge and educates civil engineers and lecturers needed to reach the UN's sustainability goals. We have approximately 150 employees, 70 PhD students and soon 1500 students. The education and research at REALTEK cover a broad spectrum of disciplines. This includes data science, mechanics and process engineering, robotics, construction and architecture, industrial economics, environmental physics and renewable energy, geomatics, water and environmental engineering, applied mathematics as well as secondary school teacher education in natural sciences and use of natural resources such as in agriculture, forestry and aquaculture. The workplace is in Ås, 30 km from Oslo.

About the position

The faculty of Science and Technology at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has a vacant 2-year Postdoctoral position related to Systematic project completion/Commissioning of Building Construction projects in Norway.

The successful candidate will be included in the research group of Industrial Economics/project management.

The postdoc is a collaboration between NMBU, Statsbygg and Advansia. The faculty of Science and Technology funds the postdoc.

The postdoc work will build up on earlier studies at NMBU- industrial economics study program

"Systematic completion in Norwegian construction projects: Challenges, elements for success and effects".

Previous study on systematic completion revealed several important findings. The findings include the challenges of using the methodology, elements for success, as well as effects of using the systematic completion methodology. The main challenges of systematic completion include a wide varying understanding of the term "systematic completion" in the construction industry, need for greater transparency and interdisciplinary cooperation skills in the projects, and lack of willingness to change. Good management, a focus on skills development, step-by-step testing, and synergy effects that develops from the combination of systematic completion with lean and interaction models are identified as essential elements for the success of systematic completion.

The study has also revealed positive effects of systematic completion. These include more satisfied customers, reduced and more correct use of resources, fewer errors, increased quality, good involvement and training of users and operations, as well as probable financial gain. Based on the study's findings, it is reasonable to assume that systematic completion can help solve some of the challenges the construction industry faces today. The postdoc is expected to strengthen those findings using extensive data from the Norwegian construction industry in cooperation with Statsbygg and Advansia.

Main tasks

• Early planning and proper sequencing to detect fail and & missing
• Developing systematic approach to project completion
• Developing good management system that solves the existing problem in using the method
• Find a way on how to use systematic completion in combination with other methodologies
• Working on step-by-step testing
• Documenting the financial effects of using systematic completion
• Carry out a case study where the candidate will follow the processes from A-Z on a detailed level, to uncover strengths and weaknesses, and room for improvement

Competence

Required Academic qualifications:

• PhD in Project management, Industrial economy, Building construction, Industrial engineering
• PhD from abroad must be approved/accepted by NOKUT.

The following experiences and skills will be emphasized:

• Good experience in building construction projects
• Experience in project commissioning
• Experience in Project management
• Experience in professional writing of papers
• Experience in qualitative and quantitative research methodologies
• Good capabilities in spoken and written English or/ and Norwegian

You need to:

• Be able to work independently and in groups
• Have good communication skills
• Good work motivation

Remuneration and further information

The position is placed in government pay scale position code 1352 Postdoctoral Fellow, wage framework 24 (salary grade 61-77) (NOK 563.500 - 765.600), depending on qualifications. Seniority Promotion in position.
