Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Differential Geometry

Deadline: 09.05.2021

UiT The Arctic University of Norway

UiT is a multi-campus research university in Norway and the northernmost university of the world. Our central location in the High North, our broad and diverse research and study portfolio, and our interdisciplinary qualities make us uniquely suited to meet the challenges of the future. At UiT you can explore global issues from a close-up perspective.

Credibility, academic freedom, closeness, creativity and commitment shall be hallmarks of the relationship between our employees, between our employees and our students and between UiT and our partners.

Faculty of Science and Technology/ The Department of Mathematics and Statistics

The position

At the Department of Mathematics and Statistics a position is available for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Differential Geometry, for a period of 2 years from 15.08.2021.The position is affiliated with the research group in pure mathematics. The position is a fixed term position for a duration of 2 years. Appointment to the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow is mainly intended to provide qualification for work in top academic positions. It is a prerequisite that the applicant is able to carry out the project over the full course of the employment period. No person may hold more than one fixed-term position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the same institution.

The position is at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Around 40 people are employed in the department, of which 17 are permanent faculty, 2 are administrative positions, and the rest are Ph.D. students and postdocs.

The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time, within 6 months after receiving the offer.

The project/position's field of research

The position will be attached to the project “Symmetry, Curvature Reduction and Equivalence Methods” (SCREAM) funded by the GRIEG initiative for Norwegian-Polish collaboration. The project is concerned with the investigation of geometric models related to parabolic geometries possibly equipped with additional geometric structures, see this link.

Particular tasks will be related to the computation of symmetries, curvature reductions and differential invariants of various geometries, their supersymmetric analogs and relations to dispersionless integrability of partial differential equations via the twistor program. The group is active in applications of Lie-theoretic methods to Cartan geometries and the formal theory of differential equations.
