About the position

The USN School of Business has a vacancy for a 100 % temporary position as PhD Research Fellow in Management "Sustainability through digital transformation in a collaborative and co-creating network” from 01.08.2023.

The position is located at the Department of Business, Strategy and Political Science. The main place of employment is campus Kongsberg and the immediate superior is the Department Head.

The employment period will be three years of full time research and training, with no teaching obligations. It a premise for employment that the PhD Research Fellow is enrolled in USN’s PhD-program in Management within three months of accession in the position.

About the PhD-project

Sustainability through digital transformation in a collaborative and co-creating network

The PhD researcher in this project will investigate the role of inter-organizational collaboration and coordination for digital transformation in a value chain perspective and how this digital transformation can contribute to sustainability improvement in an industrial cluster. Therefore, the main research questions in this project are “how can we achieve the digital transformation in a value chain perspective and within a network of organizations?” and “how the collaboration among multiple (potentially competing) companies in an industrial cluster can facilitate the digital transformation process in achieving a more sustainable supply chain?”

The objective is developing methods to guide Agile Industry 4.0 production with a value chain perspective (to achieve zero waste from design to finished product). We would also explore the factors that influence the collaboration for digital transformation and mechanisms to facilities the inter-organization collaboration and coordination for Digital Transformation.

Responsibilities:

The PhD researcher will work within the Collaborative Innovation, Societal transformation and Operations Management (CISOM) research group and on-going projects within the group. Therefore, together with scientific capabilities, we are looking for a proactive researcher with an affinity for cooperation with academic partners and non-academic stakeholders. The project planning and execution will be pursued in line with the recognized USN standards. Completed research plan includes four publications in leading international journals and peer-reviewed conference proceedings as the main deliverables.

Considering the nature of project, fluent Scandinavian and English skills are key criteria as the research project is empirically positioned in Norway.

Qualifications

  • Applicants must hold a MSc (120 ECTS) in marketing, business, management, or equivalent (in particular, Operations Management or Industrial Engineering) or a closely related discipline (including Technology and Innovation Management, Strategy, or Organizational Behaviour); with documented command of research methodology with average grade B or higher.
  • Highly qualified candidates with other educational backgrounds may be considered.
  • Candidates with other backgrounds must at a minimum have a master level course in research methods and a master level course in their main field of study.
  • Applicants with MSc degrees from institutions outside Europe must document GMAT results of a minimum of 600 points (or GRE equivalent).
  • Candidates must have an excellent command of written and spoken English and Norwegian (or other Scandinavian languages).
  • The degree must be accomplished before the commencement date
  • Expertise in qualitative and/or quantitative research (programming language skills such as Python, and OR solvers)
  • General knowledge about algorithmic methods
  • General knowledge about Industry 4.0 and Logistics 4.0.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.

Salary

PhD Research Fellow (code 1017): NOK 501 200 a year. Further promotion will be based on time served in the position.

A statutory contribution to the state pension plan will be deducted from the employee’s salary.

Other information

  • The Academic Appointments Board for PhD Research Fellowships is responsible for the appointment. An expert assessment of applicants will be carried out. The candidates deemed best qualified will be invited to an interview.
  • The successful candidate is obliged to participate in all common activities relating to the PhD education such as course work, seminars, and other events. These activities take place in campus Drammen and candidates located on other campuses must commute there to participate.
  • An integral part of this 3-year fulltime PhD-study is campus based presence.
  • Please note that approved work permit is a prerequisite for the employment.
  • The research area for the position can include technologies referred to in the Ministry's export control regulations, in that case the candidate must be eligible to obtain a security clearance.
