Faculty of Health Sciences

The position

At the Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Medical Biology, a 100% Chief engineer / Senior engineer position has become available. The position is located at the UiT Proteomics and Metabolomics Core Facility (PRiME). We are seeking a dedicated and independent engineer with an interest in management of advanced scientific instruments and metabolomic data analysis.

The Department of Medical Biology employs around 200 people and conducts biomedical research within areas such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, immunology, pharmacology, and antibiotic resistance. The department teaches students in medicine, dentistry, biomedical laboratory sciences, and biomedicine.

PRiME have three high-resolution LC-MS systems and a low-resolution LC-MS system. Two of the LC-MS systems are dedicated for metabolomic analysis. PRiME does proteomics and metabolomics MS based services for users in Tromsø. This includes the departments at the faculty of health sciences and other faculties at UiT. We perform both targeted and untargeted metabolomic analysis at the facility. PRiME have three permanent technical positions and several affiliated positions at Department of Pharmacy, Department of Medical Biology and Department of Clinical Medicine.

The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer.

Job description

  • Maintenance of and troubleshooting of advanced instruments. Mass spectrometers, LC’s and pipetting robot
  • Sample preparation
  • Participation in planning of metabolomic projects
  • Analysis of targeted and untargeted metabolomic data
  • Development, validation and verification of analytic methods and instruments for the core facility
  • Train and support users in the use of scientific instruments and data analysis
  • Contact with instrument vendors when service due

Qualifications

  • The position requires a master’s degree or equivalent in chemistry, pharmacy or similar. Continuing and further education combined with long and relevant experience may compensate for lack of formal competence.
  • Fluency in English is required
  • Practical experience with mass spectrometry coupled to chromatography (LC-MS)
  • Hands on processing and interpretation of LC-MS data
  • Practical experience with laboratory work

Desired:

  • PhD in chemistry, pharmacy or similar
  • Practical experience with sample preparation for LC-MS analysis
  • Experience with automated liquid handling robots
  • Working knowledge of Norwegian or a Scandinavian language
  • Knowledge of both high and low resolution mass spectrometry
  • Experience in analysis of both targeted and untargeted metabolomics analysis
  • Experience with troubleshooting and preventive maintenance of analytical instruments

Remuneration of the positions are in salary code 1087 (or 1181) on the pay scale for Norwegian state employees, (depending on qualifications). There is a 2% deduction for contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. In addition, UiT pays directly to the pension fund on top of the salary - in 2023 this rate is 9 %.
