The Norwegian Veterinary Institute The Norwegian Veterinary Institute is a research institute in the areas of animal health, fish health and food and feed safety, whose primary function is supply of research-based knowledge support to the authorities.


NVI have a free and independent position in all academic questions. As the authorities' main advisor in topics related to prevention, handling and elimination of zoonosis and serious infectious diseases in fish and land animals, NVI performs an important task to the Norwegian society. NVI also assists in the prevention and management of crises caused by hazardous compounds and contaminants in feed and food.


We provide services and advice to the industry, professionals and pet owners. The institute’s headquarters are located in Ås, but NVI is present throughout Norway with 5 regional laboratories in Sandnes, Bergen, Trondheim, Harstad and Tromsø.

A three-year researcher position in fish health management and husbandry

The Norwegian Veterinary Institute has a vacant 3-year position as a researcher in the expanding area of sustainable aquaculture development internationally, with a desired start-up as soon as possible. This is an exciting opportunity for competent candidates with interest and experience from working internationally with farmed aquatic animal health management and husbandry. The right candidate will be joining our team of experts in epidemiology, biosecurity, diagnostics and applied health management.

Our projects are presently located in African, Latin American and Asian countries, funded mainly by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD). We collaborate with other national/international scientific institutions and international organizations such as Food Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and World Organisation of Animal Health (WOAH). The working language in the group is English. The working place is our main office at Ås, 30 km south of Oslo.

Main tasks

The right candidate will strengthen our field capacity in tropical aquaculture, and take part in current and forthcoming projects specifically related to advanced extension work in close collaboration with governmental institutions in project countries and extension officers; to be a trainer of trainers.

The most prominent work tasks will include:

  • Developing biosecurity guidelines and self-assessment tools for sustainable aquaculture production in tropical countries.
  • Review and suggest improvements of existing regulatory guidelines for fish feed and monitoring systems.
  • Develop a system for regular environmental impact assessment.
  • Travel to project countries for extended periods.

Qualification requirements

  • A master degree or higher from a relevant biological discipline.
  • Practical experience in tropical aquatic animal farming.
  • Good presentation skills in English both orally and in writing.

Preferable qualifications:

  • Relevant experience in fish health management and husbandry in aquaculture.
  • Working knowledge in fish nutrition.
  • Veterinary medicine and/or epidemiology background with practical understanding of health management challenges in tropical aquaculture.
  • Experience from working in a multicultural environment, multi-national organizations.
  • Ability to communicate in writing and orally in Spanish, Portuguese and/or French.
