Researcher Position: Regulation of starvation-induced degrowth in the sea anemone Nematostella vectensis

Researcher Position

There is a vacancy for a 2-year Researcher position at the Sars International Centre for Marine Molecular Biology in the research group of Dr. Patrick Steinmetz. The position is funded by Sars Centre core funding. The Sars Centre belongs to the University of Bergen, and is a partner of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). The place of work will be at the Sars Centre. The preferred starting time is November 2021.

About the project/work tasks:

The research group ‘Evolution of nutrient and growth homeostasis in animals’ is interested in understanding the evolution of the cells and molecules that regulate the balance between nutrient availability and growth in animals. One of the main research lines of the lab is to study the starvation-induced degrowth of juveniles in the sea anemone Nematostella. The successful applicant will functionally investigate a subset of genes that have resulted from an ongoing, thorough RNA-Seq analysis at different starvation periods using a combination of CRISPR mutants, transgenic reporter lines, RNA-Seq analysis and confocal imaging.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

• The applicant must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree or must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded
• Prior experience in working with post-larval stages of Nematostella is a requirement
• Prior expertise in the generation and analysis of RNA-Seq datasets, the generation of CRISPR mutants and in the use of different confocal microscopy techniques (e.g. point scanner, spinning disc) are requirements
• A strong motivation to perform research at an internationally competitive level is expected
• The ability to work both independently and to cooperate with others in a structured manner is essential
• Proficiency in both written and oral English is a requirement
