The Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) is recruiting a researcher with a strong profile in system dynamics modelling. The candidate should be a social science researcher with broad experience in the application of the system dynamics modeling technique and here particularly in connection with socio-economic processes, climate change and resource management. The person should have a demonstrated ability to work interdisciplinary.

The position is placed in NIVA’s fast-growing section for Water and Society consisting of about 20 researchers with backgrounds in social, economic and natural sciences, where central research themes are climate change and adaptation, freshwater including urban waters management, environmental marine governance, environmental and bioeconomy, circular economy, ecosystems services assessment; plastics and waste management, and participatory processes for stakeholder involvement. We work nationally and internationally, from local to global scales and note an increasing interest in our competencies on all levels. In addition to typical research projects we also conduct knowledge projects supporting capacity building, business development and innovation development for the public and private sectors.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development of a system dynamics model in the ongoing EU-project Smartlagoon . This will account for 50% of work time 2023-2024.
  • Proactively explore cooperation possibilities with other modellers in NIVA with the potential aim to develop couplings between socio-economic and environmental models, eg in Digital Twins
  • Support building NIVAs competence in use of SD-modelling for socio-economic purposes
  • Join meeting arenas where NIVA, NILU and IFE under the NORIN cooperation develop new research activities and digital approaches for smart urban development
  • Publishing of projects results in scientific peer-reviewed journals as well as contribute to dissemination activities to stakeholders and the general public
  • Acquisition of new projects, where system dynamics modelling is a component
  • For own projects, ensure that they are implemented in accordance with plan and budget

Qualifications and experience

  • Have higher education (at least master degree) in system dynamic modelling and must be able to demonstrate its qualification through project experience and publications
  • Demonstrated skills in socio-economic-environmental dynamics modelling
  • Experience in using participatory approaches to set up system-dynamics models
  • Good understanding of policy interventions, preferably in the context of agriculture and urban management including economic policy instruments
  • Excellent written and spoken English are required
  • Scandinavian language skills are an advantage, but not a requirement
