The Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO) is an internationally leading, specialized university within the disciplines design, architecture, landscape architecture and urbanism. The Institute of Design is responsible for AHO's 5-year integrated Master's program in design, as well as the school's 2-year international Master's program in design. Additionally, the institute runs a executive master within SOD in system-oriented design. The institute adopts a broad and comprehensive approach to design, emphasizing the discipline's societal relevance. It engages in teaching and research within, and across, the fields of industrial design, interaction design, service design, and system-oriented design. The skills acquired by our students during their education are highly sought after in the Norwegian job market. The institute is one of the leading academic communities both within and outside Europe. With a highly international environment comprising 52 staff members from various nations, the institute maintains extensive national and international networks. It collaborates closely with both the private sector and the public sector in research and innovation projects. About the position

The Institute of Design at The Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO) call for applications for a full-time, four-year position as an associate professor in interaction design, with a focus on multimodal interaction design for advances workplaces. This position will be split between teaching, as a part of the Interaction design staff, and research on next generation workplace design, as a part of the Ocean Industries Concept Lab.

We are looking for an interaction designer and researcher with a broad profile and experience from a range of digital design projects. The candidate should have experience with design- and technology-thematic from across the digital design sector. The candidate should have extensive generalist competency as an interaction designer, as well as experience in creative exploration and concept development with emerging technologies. In particular, we are seeking someone with a solid foundation in designing digital user interfaces for a range of contexts, as well as experiences in conceptualizing, critiquing and developing digital systems and interactions. A broader design background that also covers fields such as industrial design would be valuable.

As a researcher you are interested in helping to push the state of the art of design practice and develop knowledge that will help the design profession tackle design for advanced digital workplaces. The person should have extensive knowledge about how to design for complex contexts and applying both traditional screen based user interfaces and emerging technologies to improve safety critical systems.

We are interested in hiring a practiced designer with a strong portfolio who is also accomplished educator with experience from teaching design on Master- and undergraduate-level.

Responsibilities

As an educator, this person will be responsible for teaching and developing interaction design courses for Master and undergraduate students. Experience in practice-led and studio-based teaching in a design school will be prioritized.

Responsibilities teaching

  • Developing and teaching studio-based undergraduate and Master courses with a focus on interaction design in the intersection of user experiences for digital products and systems, building on iterative design methods, exploration, creativity and prototyping.
  • Developing new projects and curriculum that contributes to AHO’s 5-year Master in Design.
  • Develop collaborations and networks with partners in the industry

As a researcher, this person will be responsible for developing research related to user centered design for advanced multimodal workplaces spanning screens and spatial interfaces.

Responsibilities research

  • Support research project development supporting OICL
  • Supervise junior researchers and research assistants.
  • Participate in ongoing research projects as part of the OICL team
  • Develop collaborations and networks with industry, governmental and academic partners.
  • Carry out user centered design processes.

Qualifications

  • A PhD in Interaction Design, or a related field when starting the position.
  • Documented competence in relevant educational theory and practice based on training or teaching and supervision.
  • The applicant must document experience in developing digital design projects in professional settings.
  • The applicant must document experience from design-led pedagogy and teaching
  • Excellent written and spoken English is a requirement, while fluency in Norwegian/ Scandinavian language is recommended and will be prioritized.

Research requirements

  • Experience in design and research for the ocean industries
  • Proven experience in conducting research, within interaction design for advanced workplaces.
  • Experience with user-centered design research methodologies.
  • Experience with prototyping tools and techniques.
  • Strong foundation in design principles of user interface design.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for preparing research reports, publishing papers, and presenting findings.

The position require residency in the Oslo region.
