Faculty of Science and Technology

The position

The Department for Physics and Technology, at UiT the Arctic University of Norway, announces a vacant position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the area of Space Physics. The position is a fixed term position for a duration of 3 years, and is financed through the UiT High Score programme.

Appointment to the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow is mainly intended to provide qualification for work in top academic positions. It is a prerequisite that the applicant can carry out the project over the full course of the employment period. No person may hold more than one fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the same institution.

The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within 6 months after receiving the offer.

The position's field of research

The postion is affliated to the MXD2 rocket project that makes in-situ measurements of charged dust and the surrounding plasma and collects dust material.The postion's work is linked with the study of dust particles in the mesosphere and their interaction with ionosphere plasma. 

The MXD2 rocket campaign funded by ESA-PRODEX is scheduled with a launch from Andøya, Norway in summer 2025. The payload is built at UiT and collaborating institutions in Norway, Sweden and Germany. The campaign will be supported with ground observations from the ALOMAR observatory and with EISCAT radar. They include radar meteors, polar mesospheric summer echoes and noctilucent clouds.

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will take a leading role in the rocket campaign and collaboration of the international team. The successful candidate will prepare the observations and work with the in-situ results on charged dust and the results from sample analysis to investigate the dust in the mesosphere. This includes the handling of the rocket data and participating in the sample analysis in collaboration with optical analytics experts. Archived data from ground-based and rocket observations are available for support and back-up.

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will work under the supervision of the project leader Professor Ingrid Mann and will closely work together with PhD students and Master students, as well as local, national, and international collaborators.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a background in physics, space physics, plasma physics, geophysics, planetary science, or a related field. Of particular interest are candidates who have experience in one or more of the following areas: cosmic dust, meteors, ionosphere, space measurements, radar observations, space in situ instruments, image analysis.

Qualification with a PhD is required before commencement in the position. If you’re at the final stages of your PhD, you may still apply if you have submitted your PhD thesis for doctoral degree evaluation within the application deadline. You must submit the thesis with your application. You must have dissertated before the start-up date of the position.

Fluency in English is required. Nordic applicants can document their capabilities by attaching their high school diploma.

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow position is intended to prepare candidates for a research career and the needed research background and motivation are a prerequisite.

During the assessment emphasis will be put on the candidate’s motivation, potential for research, and personal suitability for the position.

For appointment as Postdoctoral Research Fellow, the applicant is required to have a Norwegian doctoral degree in the subject area concerned or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree.

Assessment

In the assessment the main emphasis will be attached to the submitted works for the qualifying work. Emphasis shall also be attached to experience from popularization/dissemination and academic policy and administrative activity.

The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The committee's mandate is to undertake an assessment of the applicants' qualifications based on the written material presented by the applicants, and the detailed description draw up for the position.

The applicants who are assessed as best qualified will be called to an interview. The interview should among other things, aim to clarify the applicant’s motivation and personal suitability for the position. A trial lecture may also be held.

The remuneration for Postdoctoral research fellow is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1352. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.
