PhD-position (4 years)

At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Biomedicine, a PhD-position (100 %) is available for a period of four (4) years or max 4 months after completed the PhD-degree, if this is achieved within a shorter time than four years. The positions include 25 % required duties such as teaching, exam work or supervision, depending on the demands at the department.

The position is part of the project "Building the bridge between high-throughput omics analyses and novel biomedical knowledge”, linked to the Barsnes Research Group (www.cbu.uib.no/barsnes), and financed by the University of Bergen.

About the project/work tasks:

  • The main objective is the development of interactive and user-friendly bioinformatics solutions for analyzing and sharing biomedical data, with a focus on proteomics data from neurological diseases, linked to the online CSF-PR resource (www.proteomics.uib.no/csf-pr).
  • The software development will mainly be a in web-based context, but experience from traditional application development will also be relevant.
  • Combining data from different sources (including in-house generated experimental data and knowledge extracted from scientific publications) and how this information can be interpreted and visualized in a systems biology context, will be a central task.
  • The software and analysis methods developed as part of the project, should as much as possible also be made available to the other relevant research groups at the department.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • the applicant must hold a master`s degree or equivalent in informatics
  • experience in developing user-friendly software in a web-based context is a requirement
  • experience in the analysis of biomedical data is desirable, preferably based on proteomics, but related research fields such as genomics, may also be relevant
  • the candidate should be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others
  • the applicant must be fluent in oral and written English

Organized research training (PhD program):

The candidate must take part in the University of Bergen approved PhD programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years. You must have admission to the organized research training (PhD program) at the Faculty in order to qualify for the position.Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a project plan outline for the training plan must be submitted no later than three months after the date of commencement.

The PhD-position:

PhD-positions are fixed term positions. You cannot be employed in a PhD-position for more than one fixed term period at the same institution or have had similar employment at an institution in the region. The teaching language is usually in Norwegian. At the PhD-programme the teaching language is English.

For applicants with at least one year of employment in a position as a General Practitioner or Dentist, salary level 56 NOK 498 800 on the government salary scale. Further increases in salary will be based on seniority in the position. For applicants with specialist education level 59 NOK 526 000 on the government salary scale.
