PhD position

At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Clinical Science, a PhD-position (100 %) is available for a period of three (3) years. The position is part of the project “Bacterial peptidylarginine deiminase, a link between gums and joint disease”, funded by The Research Council of Norway

About the project/work tasks:

  • The project investigates an impact of the periodontal-disease related pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis and its virulence factors on the development of chronic inflammatory diseases
  • The main research done by a successful applicant will be focused on effects of inflammatory post-translational modifications (citrullination and carbamylation) on coagulation system and the role of bacterial peptidylarginine deiminase (PPAD) as a virulence factor

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • The applicant must hold a master`s degree or equivalent in molecular biotechnology, biotechnology, biology, biochemistry or related domains
  • The successful applicant must have biochemistry experience and good knowledge of post-translational modifications
  • Previous experience in microbiology laboratory, especially in bacteria Porphyromonas gingivalis is highly appreciated
  • The candidate must have experience in flow cytometry
  • In addition, the good understanding of the protein and proteomics techniques (mass spectrometry, protein/peptide sequencing) is welcome
  • The applicant must be willing to counsel, teach, write manuscripts
  • Personal skills, including abilities to work independently and cooperate within a research group will be evaluated. For that, experience from different research teams, completed internships, international exchanges is welcome
  • The candidate must be fluent in written and oral English. A high score in an international English exam, such as IELTS or TOEFL is appreciated

About the PhD position (applies to university PhD positions):

Organized research training (PhD program): The candidate must take part in the University of Bergen approved PhD programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years. You must have admission to the organized research training (PhD program) at the Faculty in order to qualify for the position. Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a project plan outline for the training plan must be submitted no later than three months after the date of commencement.

The PhD-position: PhD-positions are fixed term positions. You cannot be employed in a PhD-position for more than one fixed term period at the same institution or have had similar employment at an institution in the region.

  • Salary at pay grade 54 (code 1017/pay framework 20.10) NKR 491 200 before taxes, in the state scale. Further increases in salary will be based on seniority in the position. For applicants with at least one year of employment in a position as a General Practitioner or Dentist, salary level 56 NKR 507 600. Medical specialist start on wage level 59 NKR 534 400
