Faculty of Health Sciences

The position

A PhD position is available at the Department of Clinical MedicineFaculty of Health Sciences with the research group of Child and Adolescent Health in the research project Optimizing mastitis identification and treatment OPTIMIST.

The position is for a period of four years. The nominal length of the PhD programme is three years. The fourth year is distributed as 25 % each year and will consist of teaching and other duties for the Faculty of Health Sciences. The objective of the position is to complete research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to the PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position.

The field of research is microbiology, immunology and microbiome analyses by the use of bio-informatic tools.

The PhD candidate will investigate the microbial composition in milk and skin swab samples both by growth dependent and independent (metagenome sequencing) methods, immunological markers will be analysed by Luminex analyses. Data from questionnaires will be included in the interpretation and final analysis of the development of mastitis. See more information about the project below.

The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer.

The project

In this project in microbiology the candidate will work with analyses of the microbial composition of milk and skin swab samples from breastfeeding mothers before and after development of mastitis. Mastitis is a common complication during breastfeeding, occurring most frequently in the first six to eight weeks after birth. Bacterial mastitis due to S. aureus infection is well-established in clinical guidelines. However, a growing body of evidence indicates that opportunistic pathogens which form part of the normal milk microbiome may also have a role in mastitis and breast inflammation. We have an incomplete understanding of breast inflammation and mastitis and how the condition manifests and progresses.

With this project, we propose to fill in the gaps regarding the causes and progression of breast inflammation and mastitis among lactating women in Norway. We have started recruiting mothers collecting milk samples and skin swab samples at different time points to analyse markers of inflammatory status and use both culture-dependent and culture-independent microbiological techniques to study the microbial composition of milk. In addition, we collect data from detailed questionnaires. Together, this will give us insight into both the inflammatory response and longitudinal changes in the microbial community, and if this changes during a mastitis episode.

The candidate wilk work with culture dependent and culture independent analyses of milk samples and skin swab to characterise the milk and skin microbiome. Bio-informatic analyses will be performed to compare if there is a shift in the milk microbiome during episodes of mastitis. Finally, metadata collected from questionnaires will be analysed in correlation to the microbiome data.
