About the PhD fellowship:
The Ocean represents Earth’s final frontier, and, through the multitude of marine life forms, it’s a repository of biologically active compounds awaiting to be revealed. Within the Arctic region there are several unique biotopes framing different adaptive mechanisms on a molecular level. Of particular interest is the output of algal secondary metabolites containing structural features that are interlinked with innate immune response. This project aims at synthesis of specific algal anti-inflammatory motifs and to subsequently test activity in relevant in vitro models.
The appointed PhD-candidate will be involved in 1) the development of cascade reactions applying asymmetric organocatalytic methodology, 2) the total synthesis of marine natural products targeting aspects of translational medicin, and 3) the application of marine natural products with respect to testing different in vitro models.
The PhD-position is within the AMBiome Division at Nord University, Campus Bodø. The project will be headed by associate professor Jens Nolsøe in collaboration with national and international researchers.
As of late 2024, the Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture has relocated to a purpose-built state-of-the-art life science building, Noatun. On-site, the appointed PhD-candidate will have access to brand new laboratory facilities with dedicated analytical instruments, such as LC-MS (SQ), GC-MS (TQ), and NMR. In terms of location and leisure activities, Bodø is a vibrant city surrounded by stunning Arctic nature and offers an excellent quality of life in one of the world’s most developed countries.
The contract will be for a 3-year period without teaching. The start-up date will be August 18, 2025.
