The purpose of the PhD Research Fellowship for the admitted candidate is to undergo a research-training programme that leads to the successful completion of a doctoral degree. The candidate has to apply to the PhD programme INSEPP and is expected to participate actively in INSEPP’s activities.
The PhD candidate will be a part of an international team of innovation researchers at INN University. The project Rural housing explore different drivers and barriers for regional renewal within the housing sector with empirical main attention on the region of Inland in Eastern Norway. The candidate will carry out studies of the housing market, to investigate possible new innovative housing solutions, and what measures are needed. By comparing several municipalities, the candidate will also explore variation within the housing market and the extent to which municipalities in rural areas have developed strategies and tools to deal with challenges in the housing market.
The Rural housing project will co-operate with leading milieus in the field, and abroad research stays will be facilitated. The project will seek to establish new knowledge about the challenges Norwegian rural municipalities’ face in the housing market, and which housing policy options and solutions that may be applied, and at the same time, link this research to policy advice. Rural housing draw on interdisciplinary literature from social science, economics, geography, regional planning, and public policy.
The candidate must have good methodological knowledge in the method chosen in the project, as well as other relevant theoretical and empirical tools.
The following description provide information about the different fields of study:
- We are seeking a candidate with particular attention towards the role of housing in rural development. Examples of study topics can be:
1) To what extent does locality contribute to challenges on the housing market?
2) To what extent does challenges in meeting the housing need of the population vary between urban and rural areas, and between rural areas, today and over time? What characterize rural regions and dwellings that perform best or worse in meeting the housing need of the population?
3) Which innovative housing solutions, economically and environmentally sustainable, may be relevant to increase settlement in rural areas? (owning, renting, subletting, type of housing, and location).
4) How may stakeholders, private companies and public actors cooperate to create affordable housing solutions, adapted to local development and jobs? What instruments exist and what barriers do they face?
We are looking for candidates that are highly motivated for research on housing in the field of social science, economics, geography, or regional development.
The person to be appointed must have a 2 years master's degree, 120 ECTS, cf. the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education’s (NOKUT) requirements for admission to PhD-education at Norwegian universities. It must be underlined that HINN’s PhD regulation requires that the master's education include a master’s thesis of 30 ECTS. As a rule, the average grade must be B.
Applicants with a master’s degree from universities abroad, have to attach “Recognition of foreign higher education” from NOKUT. Instructions on how to get this master’s degree assessed and approved are given by NOKUT, cf.
Master Thesis on the topic of social science, economics, regional and rural planning, geography, public policy etc.
Good methodological knowledge
Expertise in the use of relevant ICT software in the PhD program and possibly in teaching.
Research experience acquired after completion of the master’s degree is a pro, but not a requirement.
Oral and written English is required. In addition, it is highly desirable to have command of a Scandinavian language.
Ability to work independently and purposefully but also have a command of co-operation on research tasks and publishing.
Evaluation of candidates for the position will be based on a total assessment of educational background, experience and personal suitability, as well as motivation and other eligibility requirements, as defined in the advertisement. In addition, the following will be emphasized: quality of the project description, documented independent research and development work or experience relevant to the project.

The applicant must submit a project proposal with a progress plan in Norwegian or English, 5-7 pages, that explains how the research work will be carried out and addresses academic relevance, challenges and possibilities within the project. The PhD research fellow hired will prepare a complete project proposal creating the basis for admission to the PhD program in collaboration with a supervisor. The project proposal plays an important part in evaluating applicants and must show how the project will lead to a successful completion of a doctoral degree within four years.
