The Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management (MINA) works with nature and the environment, sustainable use of natural resources, biological and geological processes.
MINA’s employees undertake teaching, research and dissemination within the fields of geology, hydrology and limnology, soil science, environmental chemistry, forestry, ecology, natural resource management, renewable energy, and nature-based tourism.

About the position
Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management (MINA) at Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has a vacant fulltime permanent position as Associate professor/ Professor within plant ecology. MINA is Norway's leading academic institution in field-based ecological research and teaching, and we are seeking to expand our program in field-based ecology.
The new position will be in the Ecology and Natural Resource Management section, where the candidate will join an excellent group of researchers covering a broad spectrum of ecology. We wish to complement and strengthen the plant ecology group with a new position in plant ecology focused within the field of restoration ecology.
Main tasks
Developing and teaching a master’s course in plant ecology
Teaching in conservation/global change/restoration topics
Initiate and secure external project funding, and conduct high level research
Publish scientific articles and communicate findings to the general public
Supervise BSc, MSc and PhD students
Participate in the development of BSc and MSc programs, and activities directed to “life-long learning”/continuing education
Participate in administrative tasks
Competence
Required Academic qualifications
PhD in plant ecology or biology
A substantial list of high-quality publications in plant ecology and related fields
Experience in conducting field-based research
Oral and written communication skills in English
The following experiences and skills will be emphasized:
Background in restoration ecology
Knowledge about Scandinavian vegetation
Knowledge about the Norwegian conservation management system
Experience in supervising MSc and PhD candidates
Solid background in statistical methods and in use of R
Ability to initiate, obtain funding and carry out research projects
Experience from interdisciplinary research
Oral and written communication skills in a Scandinavian language
Besides scientific expertise, we put emphasis on teaching experience, pedagogical and administrative expertise.
You need to have the following personal qualities:
Good work ethic and good cooperation skills
Ability to establish contacts and develop networks
Ability to create a pleasant and productive atmosphere for students and colleagues
Required for a position as associate professor:
Documented educational competence using a “teaching portfolio” with a description of;
Pedagogic qualifications, completed programme of at least 200 hours
Teaching and supervision experience including breadth and variation in topics
Basic teaching skills in planning, implementation, evaluation and development of teaching and supervision
Those who do not meet the pedagogic requirements for employment are required to meet them within two years of employment.
Required for a position as professor:
Professor competence at the scientific level in accordance with established international or national standards in the subject area
Documented educational competence using a “teaching portfolio” with a description of;
Pedagogic qualifications, completed programme of at least 200 hours
Teaching experience at higher and lower degree levels
Broad experience of supervision, preferably at master’s degree/PhD level
Quality development in own teaching and supervision over time
Participation in work to develop quality of education in the academic community
Scientific leadership experience, and ability to communicate, network and collaborate in research and teaching
In exceptional cases, a professor may be hired subject to the requirement of documented pedagogic competence being met within two years.
Remuneration and further information
The position is placed in government pay scale position code 1011 Associate Professor, salary grade (68-84) (NOK 667.700 - 966.300), or 1013 Professor, salary grade (79-94) (NOK 845.900 - 1.220.400), depending on qualifications. Seniority Promotion in position.
