Associate Professor (førsteamanuensis) of International Education and Development Studies

The Faculty of Education and International Studies (LUI) has approximately 550 employees and 7000 students and is located in Oslo and Akershus. The Faculty is comprised of four departments as well as the National Centre of Multicultural Education (NAFO). The Faculty educates tomorrow’s teachers from kindergarten through upper secondary school, in close cooperation with the field of practical training. The Faculty offers a PhD in Education. In addition, the Faculty offers development studies and studies in sign language and interpreting. Diversity is a core value for the Faculty and its activities. The Faculty’s research and development focuses on practical training and is both profession-oriented and internationally oriented.
The Department of International Studies and Interpreting (IST) has leading research communities in the fields of diversity, interpreting, global development and international education, and its activities are characterised by extensive international cooperation. The Department offers bachelor’s degrees in development studies, interpreting and sign language, as well as a master’s degree in international education and development. The Department also offers a number of programmes for continuing education in diversity studies.
There is a vacant, permanent full-time position as Associate Professor (førsteamanuensis) of International Education and Development Studies at the Department of International Studies and Interpreting at the Faculty of Education and International Studies from 1 January 2022.
We invite applicants for this position whose academic research and teaching experience involves consideration of international (formal / informal / popular) education from a global development perspective. In particular, this work must include a focus on the Global South, and on Global North/South dynamics. Applicants must have documented research experience from regions and specific countries within the Global South.
The successful applicant will demonstrate a readiness to teach into the Master’s in International Education and Development programme, including supervision of Master’s theses; and into the Bachelor programme in International Development Studies. Applicants must have a good understanding of, and commitment to, the cross-disciplinary nature of the fields of international education and development studies, and to working effectively with colleagues from these fields of study.
The Department of International Studies and Interpreting, in which the position is located, is a leading academic environment for the study of the phenomena of global development, and of international education in relation to global development.

- teach and supervise (physically and digitally) at the bachelor's, master’s, and possibly PhD levels.
- initiate and carry out academic research within international development studies
- initiate and participate in the development of major international research projects and applications for external funding in collaboration with colleagues
- seek out and actively collaborate with national and international research partners
- contribute to the further development of the academic community and the department’s study programmes
- disseminate research results to the international academic community and society in general
- contribute to the development of high-quality education
- carry out academic administrative tasks
To be appointed to a position of Associate Professor (førsteamanuensis), a candidate must hold a doctorate degree such as a Ph.D. degree in the field of International Education, or in the field of Development Studies with a documented research focus on education in the Global South.
- The applicant must be able to document relevant qualifications in university pedagogics. Applicants who are unable to document basic teaching qualifications upon appointment, must acquire these qualifications within two years. Oslo Metropolitan University offers a course on Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (UHPED) that meets this requirement.
- Proficiency in oral and written English is required.
- Applicants who do not have adequate proficiency in a Scandinavian language must acquire Norwegian skills corresponding to at least level B2 within three years after starting in the position.
In the assessment and ranking og qualified applicants, emphasis will be placed on:
- research and development work of relevance to the position.
- Emphasis will be placed on publications from the past six years.
- research in the field of international education with a global development perspective
- research experience from within the Global South
- experience with research networks and externally funded projects.
- potential for project acquisition
- experience with teaching and supervision at the bachelor’s and master’s levels
- teaching skills at university level, in both physical and online settings.
- digital proficiency, including experience with student-active digital learning tools
- the ability to communicate and collaborate with students and colleagues
- personal qualities that can contribute positively to the working environment
- good oral and written presentation skills in a Scandinavian language and English
- applicants whose first language is not one of the Scandinavian languages, must document both oral and written language skills

The salary for the position is in accordance with the pay scale for state employees and OsloMet’s salary policy:
The annual salary range for Associate Professor (førsteamanuensis, position code 1011) is NOK 535 200,- NOK 694 000,- per year. A higher salary may be considered for particularly qualified applicants. A contribution of 2% to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the salary.
