Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology

The position

The Department of Building, Energy and Material TechnologFaculty of Engineering Science and Technolog has a position as Researcher available. The position is for a period of two years.

The position will be affiliated with the Department of Building, Energy and Material Technology, and the researcher will be part of the DeTeA "Building Materials: design-testing-application" research group within the department. The department is responsible for various study programs related to building technology, as well as renewable energy, and the number of students is approximately 400. The department organizes most research activities under research groups.

The research group activities are aligned with UiT strategy, which is focused on sustainability and climate change mitigation and further to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The objective of the position is to conduct research activities within the CIRC-BOOST project, a Horizon Europe. 

The workplace is at UiT in Narvik. You must be able to start in the position within 3 months after receiving the offer.

The position’s field of research /research project and other duties

In order to upscale circular solutions in buildings and the construction sector in general, a concentrated research effort involving multiple actors and stakeholders is needed. This includes the development and deployment of both digital and technical solutions in building urban material databanks, digital twins, as well as demolition, decontamination and recycling and reuse of waste materials. With this in mind, the Circ-Boost project proposes to become a focal point and interaction node for different emerging technologies to foster circularity in buildings and the construction sector. The project's core consists of five pilot projects, deployed in different European regions, highlighting and demonstrating at large scale novel and integrated solutions for demolition, construction waste processing, management, and valorisation in new products. Transversal activities of digitalization will allow collaboration between the pilot projects and more efficient use of digital tools and platforms. Targeted activities are envisioned for boosting and maximising the pilot projects' commercial and business potential through effective exploitation measures. Furthermore, in order to ensure that the solutions demonstrated will actually be adopted by the industry, the project will support construction and design companies in educating and training their workforce to optimally use the new technologies as part of training activities. The Circ-Boost project will also leverage the partners' existing regional and international networks and connect with new networks, initiatives, and projects to disseminate and compare project results with a wide audience of construction stakeholders increasing the overall uptake potential of circular solutions. Finally, tailor-made communication and dissemination measures will further support the dissemination of project results with policy makers, and European-wide construction industry, as well as the promotion of the project's success.

UiT is one of the Norwegian partners in the CORC-BOOST project and search for someone who can join the project and contribute to activities connected to the Norwegian pilot project.

The main objectives of the research position will be:

  • provide knowledge and support to Norwegian pilot partners (Lofotr Næringsdrift AS, Reno-Vest IKS and Lund Hagem Arkitekter AS)
  • activity connected to demolition such as ensuring selective demolition and following the sorting of CDW
  • cooperate with Reno-Vest IKS during the production of recycled concrete aggregates (RCA), ensure good practice and high quality of produced RCA
  • cooperation with Lund Hagem Arkitekter AS during the design of Gaia museum and provide needed support and materials
  • involvement in preparation and coordination of work with local construction companies and concrete produces during the utilization of RCA in the new building of Gaia museum
  • other tasks connected to CIRC-BOOST activities in other Work packages

Qualifications

An appointment as 1108 Researcher requires:

  • Master’s degree ’in engineering or equivalent from a university or a university college
  • Relevant research qualifications above the level of a master’s degree and/or relevant professional practice

This position requires a master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field. It is considered an advantage to have a bachelor’s degree in Civil, Chemical, Material, Mechanical or Building Services engineering, and a Masters’s degree in engineering in a field relevant to the theme of the open position. If you are near completion of your master’s degree, you may still apply.

Applicants must document fluency in English and be able to work in an international environment. Nordic applicants can document their English capabilities by attaching their high school diploma. Working knowledge of Norwegian or a Scandinavian language is also beneficial.

In the assessment, the emphasis is on the applicant's knowledge in the field of recovery of construction and demolition waste and management skills connected to the coordination of project activities. Education in a given field, previous experience in the Norwegian industry, and communication skills will be taken into consideration.

Work and salary conditions 

The successful candidate must be willing to get involved in the ongoing development of their department and the university as a whole.

The allocation of working hours is flexible and allocated on a case-by-case basis. In general, the working hours shall primarily be utilized for research, research-related activities and research administration. The researcher is expected to participate professionally within the department, and can be assigned to teaching, teaching related work, supervision of students, presentations for faculty and students, laboratory assignments etc., in an amount equivalent up to 25% of the position.

The remuneration for Researchers is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1108. 

A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted. UiT pays directly to the pension fund on top of the salary - in 2023 this rate is 9 %. As a state employee, you have one of the best pension schemes available. For more information see: spk.no.

Assessment
