Faculty of Science and Technology

The position

The Department of Chemistry seeks a motivated and enthusiastic PhD fellow to join the Research Group in Macromolecular Chemistry. The successful PhD fellow will become a member of an international and interdisciplinary research team focusing on structural and functional studies of proteins. Collaborative work will be carried out with other groups at the university and at European synchrotron radiation facilities. As a student, you will enter an international and collegial environment, and be enrolled in the Norwegian ‘BioCat Graduate School in Biocatalysis’, which provides top-level graduate courses in both scientific and transferable skills, arranges national PhD conferences and offers generous travel stipends for student research visits to collaborator laboratories.

The PhD fellow will be part of the Centre for New Antibacterial Strategies (CANS) and work in the LacZymes group.

The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position in Tromsø within a reasonable time, within 6 months after receiving the offer. The position is for a period of four years. The nominal length of the PhD programme is three years. The fourth year is distributed as 25 % each year and will consist of teaching and other duties for the department. The objective of the position is to complete research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to a PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position. The PhD fellow shall participate in the faculty’s organized research training, and the PhD project shall be completed during the period of employment.

The position’s field of research

This position will focus on structural studies of enzymes involved in bacterial antibiotic resistance. Three-dimensional structures will be used to determine residue determinants for the enzyme mechanism, and aid sequence-based diagnostics.

Methods will include some or all of the following, depending on details of the project and its progress:

  • a. Cloning, expression and purification of proteins
  • b. Biophysical and biochemical characterization of proteins, and complementary techniques
  • c. Biochemical and biophysical characterization protein-substrate binding
  • d. Structural analysis using X-ray crystallography
  • e. In silico molecular dynamic simulations

The PhD fellow will work in an interdisciplinary research team where we apply protein evolution to obtain mutations and use the structure-activity relationship to understand effects on the enzyme mechanisms. The PhD fellow will also interact with a machine learning group to include three-dimensional structural analysis to increase the accuracy of sequence-based diagnostics. This project will focus on serine- and metallo-beta-lactamases.
