PhD Fellow in Protein Chemistry and Structural Biophysics

Deadline: 31.05.2020

UiT The Arctic University of Norway

UiT is a multi-campus research university in Norway and the northernmost university of the world. Our central location in the High North, our broad and diverse research and study portfolio, and our interdisciplinary qualities make us uniquely suited to meet the challenges of the future. At UiT you can explore global issues from a close-up perspective.

Credibility, academic freedom, closeness, creativity and commitment shall be hallmarks of the relationship between our employees, between our employees and our students and between UiT and our partners.

The position

The Department of Chemistry seeks a motivated and enthusiastic PhD fellow to join the Research Group in Macromolecular Chemistry. The successful PhD fellow will become a member of an international and interdisciplinary research team focusing on structural and functional studies of proteins. Collaborative work will be carried out with other groups at the university and at European synchrotron radiation facilities. As a student, you will enter an international and collegial environment, and be enrolled in the Norwegian ‘BioCat Graduate School in Biocatalysis’, which provides top-level graduate courses in both scientific and transferable skills, arranges national PhD conferences and offers generous travel stipends for student research visits to collaborator laboratories.

The position is for a period of four years. The nominal length of the PhD program is three years. The fourth year is distrubuted as 25 % each year, and consists of teaching or other duties for the department. The objective of the position is to complete research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to the PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position.

The position is organized under the Department of Chemistry at UiT in Tromsø, and the workplace is the Norwegian Structural Biology Centre (NorStruct).

The position's field of research

This position will focus on structural and functional studies of proteins. Methods will include some or all of the following, depending on details of the project and its progress:

  • Cloning, expression and purification of proteins,
  • Biophysical and biochemical characterization of proteins and their interactions using microcalorimetry, plasmon surface resonance, etc
  • Structural analysis using X-ray crystallography and complementary techniques
  • Comparative studies using bioinformatics, homology modelling, computational chemistry and chemometrics, etc

Macromolecules prioritized for the research are phosphotransferases (protein kinases) and other enzymes relevant for drug design (especially cancer, neurodegenerative diseases and antibiotic resistance). Other active research group projects include proteins involved in DNA/RNA modulation and proteins for commercial and/or industrial use (conversion of biomass to high-value products).

Qualifications

This position requires a Master’s degree in chemistry or a relevant field of chemistry, such as biochemistry, medicinal chemistry, protein chemistry, physical chemistry or structural biology. Previous experience in one or more of the techniques or subject areas mentioned above is required to be eligible for the position.

Both a strong academic record and a genuine interest in conducting research are essential to qualify for the position. This must be demonstrated by your Master’s thesis, academic record, and other application materials (see below). Personal suitability for the position will also be emphasized.

Proficiency in a Scandinavian language an advantage due to teaching obligations.

Admission to the PhD programme

The position requires admission to the Faculty’s PhD programme. Admission requires that the applicant have at least 5 years of higher education, equivalent to 300 ECTS. The applicant must have a Master’s thesis evaluated equivalent to 30 ECTS or more, or 20 ECTS for an integrated Master’s degree. The applicant must have an average grade of C or better. Further information about requirements is available here: Regulations PhD Faculty of Sciences and Technology

Applicants from some countries (including some educations from Brazil, China, India, Russia, and USA) will have to document additional higher education in order to fulfill the requirements.

Application

Your application must include:

  • Cover letter explaining your motivation and research interests
  • CV
  • Diplomas and transcripts from your Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees or equivalent
  • Diploma Supplement for completed degrees from EU universities (and applicants from non-EU universities are advised to attach an explanation of the grading system)
  • If not otherwise exempt, documentation of English language proficiency for PhD-studies, with a recommended minimum score of 6.5 on each part of the IELTS test, or minimum scores of 22, 22, 22 and 25 (reading, listening, speaking and writing, respectively) on the TOEFL test.
  • Copy (or links) to a Master’s thesis (representing at least 30 ECTS or one full semester load); see below if the Master’s degree is not yet complete.
  • A description of research performed and/or any other works (published or unpublished) which you wish to be considered. In cases of multiple authorship, your specific contributions must be described.
