PhD Fellow in climate science related to climate sensitivity and tipping points

Deadline: 27.09.2020

UiT The Arctic University of Norway

UiT is a multi-campus research university in Norway and the northernmost university of the world. Our central location in the High North, our broad and diverse research and study portfolio, and our interdisciplinary qualities make us uniquely suited to meet the challenges of the future. At UiT you can explore global issues from a close-up perspective.

Credibility, academic freedom, closeness, creativity and commitment shall be hallmarks of the relationship between our employees, between our employees and our students and between UiT and our partners.

The position

UiT – The Arctic University of Norway and the University of Copenhagen have a vacant PhD fellow position in the area of climate science. The appointment is for four years. The position requires enrollment in the PhD program at the Faculty of Science and Technology at UiT. It is intended that the candidate also enrolls in the PhD program at the Faculty of Science at the University of Copenhagen, so that the position may lead to a double PhD degree between the two institutions, after a public defense at UiT.

The working title for the PhD project is "Climate Sensitivity and its dependence on climate state, forcing, and the spatial region." It relates to tipping points in the Earth System with particular emphasis on the theoretical underpinning of climate sensitivity to increased greenhouse gasses beyond linear response theory. Furthermore, the project will explore signatures of early warning of climate tipping points.

The candidate will combine a mathematical study with computer simulations using Earth system models. The study will be part of the European Commission Horizon2020 project TiPES, as well as UiT's cross-disciplinary research project "The Dynamics of the Climate in the Arctic". It requires international interactions with partners across Europe.
