The Institute of Basic Medical Sciences overall objective is to promote basic medical knowledge in order to understand normal processes, provide insight into mechanisms that cause illness, and promote good health. The Institute is responsible for teaching in basic medical sciences for the programmes of professional study in medicine and the Master's programme in clinical nutrition. The Institute has more than 300 employees and is located in Domus Medica.

Applications are invited for a 3 (or 4) year position in a Research Fellowship as PhD Candidate in neurophysiology (brain states and consciousness) to be based at the Brain Signaling Group, Physiology section, Department of Molecular Medicine, Institute of Basal Medical Sciences, University of Oslo.

More about the position

The fellowship will be for a period of 3 years, with no compulsory work, or for a period of 4 years, with 25 % compulsory work (e.g. teaching responsibilities at the department) contingent on the qualifications of the candidate and the teaching needs of the department.

The fellowship is devoted to carrying out a project entitled ‘Integration of social and spatial information in the hippocampal formation’.

The research fellow must take part in the Medical Faculty’s approved PhD program and is expected to complete the project within the set fellowship period. The main purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

Qualification requirements

  • Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in Neuroscience or Physiology, or an MD degree, achieved within July 30, 2019.
  • The Master’s degree must include a thesis of at least 30 ECTS.
  • The Master’s thesis must correspond to the grade B or better in the Norwegian educational system.
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.

Personal skills

We are searching for a highly motivated candidate with strong interest in neurophysiology, brain circuit functions, brain states, perception and/or consciousness research.

  • The research fellow should be able to work independently and structured, while at the same time engage in close collaborations
  • The preferred candidate has experience from systems neurophysiology
