Job description

Applications are invited for a full-time, three-year PhD position at the Institute of Health and Society as part of an epidemiological project on stroke survival. The position is funded by Extrastiftelsen and led by Øyvind Næss at the University of Oslo. Starting date June 1st or as soon as possible thereafter.

The project will use large-scale register data covering the whole population in Norway to investigate the impact geographic proximity to first-and second-degree relatives may have on stroke survival. The project group work on using various family-based data to investigate determinants of non-communicable diseases with a particular focus on cardiovascular diseases. In this particular project family data will be integrated with spatial data. The project will be linked to a larger project and collaborate with national and international colleagues.

The appointment is a fulltime position and is made for a period of 3 years. The purpose of the fellowship is research training, leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree. The fellowship requires admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Medicine. For more information see here:

The PhD candidate will be part of a team of epidemiologists, statisticians and medical doctors.

Qualification requirements

• Applicants must hold a masters degree or equivalent, preferably in statistics, epidemiology, medicine/health related sciences or social sciences and have a strong interest in quantitative methods. The Master's Degree must have been obtained by the time of application. Only applicants with grade points A or B on the ECTS scale will be qualified for admission to the PhD program.
• Fluent oral and written communication skills in English and Scandinavian.
• Education or experience from the health sector will be an advantage.
• Experience in statistical programs such as STATA, R and GIS is an advantage.

Personal skills

• You should be highly motivated, able to work independently and as part of a team, and have excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to work with a diverse range of individuals and organisations.
