Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology / Department of Industrial Engineering

The position

At the Department of Industrial Engineering a position is available for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in "Small-scale Intelligent Manufacturing Systems (SIMS) ", for a period of 3 years from 01.01.2022 to 31.12.2024. The position is affiliated with the research group "Intelligent manufacturing and logistics".

Department of Industrial Engineering is one of the departments at the Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology, UiT The Arctic University of Norway. Our department has the responsibility of undergraduate studies (bachelor) in mechanical- and process engineering, graduate (master) studies in Industrial Engineering and contributes to the faculty PhD program in engineering. Further the department has responsibility for providing preparatory courses to ensure qualified candidates to all engineering programs at the faculty.

Research activities at the department has been organized into three groups: "Intelligent Manufacturing and Logistics", "Arctic Technology and Icing" and "Materials Science". Each research group gets annual funding from the department and is responsible for developing and carrying out research projects with regional, national and international partners. The department works especially close with regional industries and industrial clusters and the department has an extensive cooperation with academic partners in Europe, Asia and America.

The department has 12 laboratories, organized thematically based on fields of education and research, i.e., small-scale intelligent manufacturing system, additive manufacturing, robot and automation, material science, and laboratory for virtual and augmented reality in industrial simulation and optimization.

The position is a fixed term position with a duration of 3 years. Work place at UiT - Campus Narvik.

Appointment to the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow is mainly intended to provide qualification for work in top academic positions. It is a prerequisite that the applicant is able to carry out the project over the full course of the employment period. No person may hold more than one fixed-term position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the same institution.

The position can/will additionally be assigned to teaching and related work for UiT in an amount equivalent to a maximum 25 % of a full-time employment.

The appointed Postdoctoral Research Fellow must have its daily workplace at UiT - The Arctic University of Norway, Narvik.

The position's field of research

The successful applicant will be working as an active member of the research group in "Intelligent manufacturing and logistics" and in team with researchers and doctoral fellows at our newly established Technology Center for Arctic Logistics Operations (ArcLog). The research field of the Postdoc position will be in intelligent and flexible manufacturing systems, especially towards the application of Industry 4.0 technologies in small scale production systems. The successful applicant should therefore possess core competence in advanced and intelligent manufacturing systems, industry 4.0, automation and robotics. Further the candidate should have extensive knowledge in computer science including programming and security systems.

The research group has currently several EU financed research projects and aims to develop new applications, especially targeted towards Horisont Europe. The successful applicant is expected to be able to initiate research cooperation and development project applications together with the members of our research group.

Qualifications

For appointment as Postdoctoral Research Fellow, the applicant requires a Norwegian doctoral degree in engineering or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree.

Qualification with a PhD is required before commencement in the position. If you’re at the final stages of your PhD, you may still apply if you have submitted your PhD thesis for doctoral degree evaluation within the application deadline. You must submit the thesis with your application. You must have dissertated before the start-up date of the position, January 1st 2022.

Industrial experience from advanced manufacturing systems and industry 4.0 technologies will add weight in your application.

Also following criteria will be emphasized in the assessment:

  • level of academic competence
  • level of research experience/track record
  • experience in working with national and international projects
  • collaboration with other researchers and industrial partners

The applicant should also elaborate his/her personal ambitions and motivation to this position. The assessment will also emphasize the applicant’s personal skills, i.e., independency, flexibility and team-working skill.

For research activities, high leverl of oral and writing skills in English are necessary. The working environment for this position is bi-lingual of Norwegian and English.

During the assessment emphasis will be put on the candidates motivation, potential for research, and personal suitability for the position.

The remuneration for Postdoctoral Research Fellow is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1352. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.

The successful candidate must be willing to get involved in the ongoing development of their department and the university as a whole.
