Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Organic Chemistry: New Methods for Selective CO2 Conversion

The position

UiT The Arctic University of Norway, Faculty of Science and Technology, has a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position vacant at the Department of Chemistry. The position is a fixed term position for a duration of 2 years and is expected to commence as soon as possible. The position is affiliated with the research group CHOCO.

Appointment to the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow is mainly intended to provide qualification for work in top academic positions. It is a prerequisite that the applicant is able to carry out the project over the full course of the employment period. No person may hold more than one fixed-term position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the same institution.

The appointed Postdoctoral Fellow must have its daily workplace at UiT - The Arctic University of Norway, Tromsø.

The position's field of research

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will employ experimental organic chemistry methods to investigate organic and organometallic molecules that can bind and activate CO2. The project goal will be to design enantioselective carboxylation reactions and to obtain an in-depth mechanistic understanding of these. The work will be performed in collaboration with computational chemists in the team. The postdoc will be located at the Dept. of Chemistry and will become a member of an enthusiastic interdisciplinary research team, which combines theoretical and organic chemistry tools in the development of novel catalysts (group website).

The candidate can expect to be involved in the supervision of Master and PhD students in the group and may participate in teaching at the Department of Chemistry in an amount equivalent to a maximum 10% of a full-time employment.

Qualifications

For appointment as Postdoctoral Research Fellow, the applicant is required to hold either a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree.

  • Candidates must have a PhD degree in Organic Chemistry or equivalent
  • Candidates must possess experience with experimental mechanistic analysis of organic or organometallic reactions
  • Experience with enantioselective reactions is an advantage
  • Experience with reactions involving conversion of CO2 is an advantage.
  • The successful candidate must have well-developed critical thinking and writing skills.
  • The ability to work independently and the motivation to solve challenging chemical problems is essential.
  • Teaching and/or supervision experience is an advantage.
  • Proficiency in both written and oral English is necessary.

Qualification with a PhD is required before commencement in the position. If you’re at the final stages of your PhD, you may still apply if you have submitted your PhD thesis for doctoral degree evaluation within the application deadline. You must submit the thesis with your application. You must have dissertated before the start-up date of the position.

In the assessment the main emphasis will be attached to the submitted works and the project proposal for the qualifying work. Emphasis shall also be attached to experience from popularization/dissemination and academic policy and administrative activity. During the assessment emphasis will be put on the candidates motivation, potential for research, and personal suitability for the position.

In the event that the position is advertised for two years or more, and teaching duties or equivalent work is attached to the position, emphasis will also be attached to teaching qualifications.

The remuneration for Postdoctoral research fellow is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1352. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.

The successful candidate must be willing to get involved in the ongoing development of their department and the university as a whole.
