The Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics (BFE) consists of Department of Arctic and Marine Biology, Norwegian College of Fishery Science (NFH) and School of Business and Economics. The main task of BFE is to conduct teaching and research dissemination at a high national and international level within all relevant fields. Prioritized research areas are aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, climate, life in the arctic, marine bioprospecting, fish health, seafood products, business and macroeconomics, resources and environment, markets and management of marine resources.
The interdisciplinary profile of the faculty provides good opportunity to develop research projects involving several research groups at the faculty according to its strategy.
The PhD position is for a fixed term, with the objective of completion of research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to a PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position. The PhD Candidate shall participate in the faculty’s organized research training, and the PhD project shall be completed during the period of employment. The Norwegian College of Fishery Science (NCFS) undertakes research and research-based teaching of high national and international quality in an interdisciplinary environment. Research activities are provisionally organized into the groups of Living Marine Resources, Food science, Fish Health, Marine Drug Discovery, Marine Resource Management and Development, Environmental and Resource Economics.
Marine resource economics (MRØ) currently includes four faculty members and 8 PhD students and 1 postdoc researcher. The group develops and applies bioeconomic modeling, evaluation approaches, behavioural theories and econometric analysis to address the challenges and problems related to the natural resources and environment/ecosystems, and the evaluation of ecosystem services. For example, our research topics span from single resources, like cod, and single industry, like the cod fisheries and the oil industry, to the relationship between industries and how they affect and are affected by the ecosystem and their services as a whole. Additionally, we study how to capture values that are not easily detected in the market: what is a fishing trip in the midnight sun worth, for instance?The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time, within 6 months after receiving the offer.The position is for a period of three years.
The position's field of research
The PhD project is within the MONEC project ("To manage or not: Assessing the benefit of managing ecosystem disservices") financed by the Research Council of Norway. The successful PhD candidate will develop and analyse both theoretical and applied bioeconomic models related to disservices from climate induced crowberry spread in arctic rangelands, especially in relation to ecosystem services such as reindeer and sheep husbandry, carbon sequestration and others. The candidate will work closely with economists, ecologists and stakeholders in the project to develop models to analyse potential management options and their consequences.

Qualifications
Master or foreign equivalent in economics,
Statistics, mathematics or related field is an advantage,
Background and experience in natural resource economics is an advantage,
A description of proposed project, which should contain an original research question, theoretical framework and methodology planned to use, suggested empirical material if applicable as well as a work-plan (up to 5 pages).
Emphasis is attached to personal suitability.
Documented knowledge of English as stated here is required, and working knowledge of Norwegian or a Scandinavian language is desirable.
Emphasis will be put on the candidates potential for research, motivation and personal suitability for the position.

As many as possible should have the opportunity to undertake organized research training. If you already hold a PhD or have equivalent competence, we will not appoint you to this position.
A shorter period of appointment may be decided when the PhD Fellow has already completed parts of their research training programme or when the appointment is based on a previous qualifying position PhD Fellow, research assistant, or the like in such a way that the total time used for research training amounts to three years.
Remuneration for the position of PhD Fellow is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1017. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.
