Many drugs currently used for cancer treatment have toxic side effects on the heart and may lead to acute decline in heart function and/or progressive development of heart failure. Increased oxidative stress, altered cardiac metabolism and reduced energetic status are suggested to play key roles in the disease progression. This project will examine how drugs used for treatment of cancer impact on cardiac metabolism. In addition, we will explore the underlying cardiotoxic mechanisms of the drugs. Both animal and cell models of cardiotoxicity will be used in the studies. In addition, the candidate is intended to write a systematic review on the topic in collaboration with Department of Community Medicine.
