The Faculty of Theology at the University of Oslo has a total of 68 staff and ca. 350 students. The faculty conducts research in the fields of theology and religious studies and offers study programmes in theology and theological education for clerical ministry and a number of study programmes within the field of religion and society.

Job description

The Faculty of Theology invites applications for a fulltime 3 or 4 year position as Postdoctoral Fellow (SKO 1352) in theology and religious studies, based at the Faculty of Theology, University of Oslo.

Starting date is 1st October 2022.

Applicants must develop a project that is thematically relevant to one or more of research groups at the Faculty.

More about the position

The appointment is a fulltime position, 10% or 25% (depending on 3 or 4 year appointment) of which is devoted to required duties, usually in the form of teaching activities.

The main purpose of the fellowship is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines.

Applicants are required to develop a focused research project with clear aims and research questions, and an appropriate methodological approach. The postdoctoral project should be well positioned in the international research field, and novelty in methodological approaches is a strength.

Experience in international publishing of high quality in the relevant research field is an advantage, as is international research experience. The successful candidate has the ability to conduct independent research of high quality, while at the same time taking an interest in collaborating with colleagues and contributing to the further development of one or more of the research groups at the Faculty.

The position offers good opportunities for advancing an internationally oriented research career. A research stay abroad during the employment period is expected, but relative to funding available.

The successful candidate is expected to be based in Oslo during the project period, starting 1 October 2022.

Postdoctoral fellows who are appointed for a period of four years are expected to acquire basic pedagogical competency in the course of their fellowship period within the duty component of 25 %.

The main purpose of the fellowship is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines.

Qualification requirements

  • Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in the relevant field. Doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Appointment is dependent on the public defence of the doctoral thesis being approved
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English
  • To qualify for a 4 year appointment: Fluent oral and written communication skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language
  • Personal suitability and motivation for the position.

In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on the documented, academic qualifications, the project description (whenever this is required in the call for applicants), and the quality of the project as well as the candidates motivation and personal suitability. Interviews with the best qualified candidates will be arranged. It is expected that the successful candidate will be able to complete the project in the course of the period of employment.
