Postdoctoral fellow in brain atlasing and neuroinformatics

Deadline: 17.06.2023

Universitetet i Oslo

The University of Oslo is Norway’s oldest and highest ranked educational and research institution, with 28 000 students and 7000 employees. With its broad range of academic disciplines and internationally recognised research communities, UiO is an important contributor to society.

The Institute of Basic Medical Sciences overall objective is to promote basic medical knowledge in order to understand normal processes, provide insight into mechanisms that cause illness, and promote good health. The Institute is responsible for teaching in basic medical sciences for the programmes of professional study in medicine and the Master's programme in clinical nutrition. The Institute has more than 300 employees and is located in Domus Medica.

Job description

Applicants are invited for a 3 year position as Postdoctoral Fellow in brain atlasing and neuroinformatics to be based in the Neural Systems laboratory at the Department of Molecular Medicine, Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, University of Oslo.

More about the position

The appointment is a fulltime position and is made for a period of up to three years, devoted to carrying out research and development in the field of brain atlasing and neuroinformatics, specifically brain-wide characterization of animal models of neurodegenerative diseases and related development and testing of tools and pipelines for large-scale data analysis.

More about the project and the research group

The project is part of the research and development performed within the Data and Knowledge and Brain Atlases areas of the European digital distributed infrastructure for brain and brain-inspired research (EBRAINS). A key goal of the project will be to contribute to the understanding of the organization of the brain in health and disease through integration and analysis of large amounts of heterogeneous research data in a common spatial brain atlas framework. Existing and new collections of rodent brain research data shared though EBRAINS will serve as starting points for the research, which will include emphasis on reproducibility and replicability through systematic sharing of research outputs and extensive documentation of analytical approaches and pipelines.

The Neural Systems Laboratory has experience with computational methods, neuroimaging, digital brain atlasing, and neuroinformatics, including development and implementation of new technologies for analysis of brain architecture, connectivity, and gene and molecular distributions at the level of regions and whole brain. The group is comprised of students and scientists with a background in medicine, biology, physics, and software engineering. Interdisciplinary collaboration within the group and with a broad range of users of our tools and data systems is key to our mission.
