PhD Research Fellowship in theoretical study of soft wetting

Deadline: 28.05.2021

Universitetet i Oslo

The University of Oslo is Norway’s oldest and highest rated institution of research and education with 28 000 students and 7000 employees. Its broad range of academic disciplines and internationally esteemed research communities make UiO an important contributor to society.

Department of Mathematics is part of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The Department is engaged in research covering a wide spectrum of subjects within mathematics, mechanics and statistics.

Job description

A PhD research fellowship in theoretical study of soft wetting is available at the Mechanics section of the Department of Mathematics, University of Oslo. The project is led by Dr. Tak Shing Chan (PI) and will be conducted in the group of Prof. Andreas Carlson.

The fellowship will be for a period of 3 years. Starting date no later than 01.10.2021.

No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo.

The position is part of the project “Dynamic wetting on soft solids” funded by the Research Council of Norway. Many biological and industrial processes involve a fluid displacing another immiscible fluid over soft solids such as biological tissues and gels. Current experiments have shown some fundamentally different dynamical wetting phenomena on soft as compared to rigid solids. The goal of the project is to develop a ground-breaking theoretical model that incorporates both viscous flow in the liquid and the viscoelasticity of the soft solid. For this position, the PhD student will develop theoretical models and perturbation/numerical methods (thin film approximation, boundary/finite element method) to study problems of soft wetting in which a fluid is displacing another immiscible fluid over a viscoelastic solid.

The PhD student will:

  • Develop models and simulation codes for fluid wetting a viscoelastic solid
  • Investigate fundamental problems of soft wetting
  • Work in an interdisciplinary team with expertise in mechanics, physics and material science
