The Department of Criminology and Sociology of Law is situated at the Faculty of Law. The Department is Norway's only department for research and education in Criminology and Sociology of Law. Research, teaching and dissemination activities within both fields are at the highest international level. The Department has about 30 employees and 500 students.

Job description

1 position as PhD Research Fellow (position code 1017) is available at the Department of Criminology and Sociology of Law, Faculty of Law, University of Oslo. The Department is the leading research and educational institution in criminology and sociology of law in Norway.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree. The candidate must be qualified for admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Law. Read about the PhD programme here. Applicants must present a proposal for a research project with relevance to the development of criminology and/or sociology or law. The proposed project should combine theoretical and empirical ambitions with feasibility. The selected candidate will automatically be admitted to the PhD programme of the Faculty of Law. The candidate is expected to be an active participant in and contributor to the research environment at the Department of Criminology and Sociology of Law and take part in one of the many multidisciplinary research groups at the Faculty of Law.

More about the position

The fellowship runs for three years without teaching duties, or four years with teaching duties constituting 25 % of the overall workload. A four-year fellowship requires that the candidate can contribute to the current teaching needs of the Faculty of Law. The Department would in particular welcome applicants that can take on teaching obligations connected to our compulsory courses. Teaching must be done in a Scandinavian language, or, in a limited number of courses, in English.

Qualification requirements and personal skills

  • The applicant must hold a five year master's degree of high quality in criminology, sociology of law or in an equivalent discipline that covers training in relevant theories and methods.
  • The applicant’s grades should be in the upper level of the grading scale. This also applies to the master’s thesis.
  • The candidate must have an excellent command of English.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured way.
  • Applicants must have good collaboration skills and the potential to contribute to the development of criminology or sociology of law.
  • Applicants must take an active part in the development of a good profession environment.

Assessment

In the evaluation of candidates, emphasis will be placed on the quality of the research proposal in addition to the candidates’ academic and personal qualifications, particularly in relation to their ability to execute the proposed project within the allotted time.

The short-listed candidates will be invited to interview for the position, either in person or via a digital platform.

The applications are evaluated by an assessment committee. The committee ranks the applicants based on the criteria indicated above and interviews with short-listed candidates. A separate interview committee may be set down. The final decision is taken by the Faculty’s appointment board.

  • Project description (5-10 pages). The project description must include a demonstration of knowledge about the topic and presentations of relevant theories, as well as a description of the research design and plan for carrying out the research, including a publication plan

  • Complete list of academic publications
  • Certified copies of certificates and academic diplomas (if the original language is not English or a Scandinavian language, an English language translation must be provided in addition to a copy of the original).
  • Up to three publications (if these are co-authored, a declaration of authorship and of the contribution of the applicant should be submitted)
  • A list of up to three references (name, relation to candidate, e-mail address and phone number)
