About The Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management
earthresQue is a Centre for Research-based Innovation (CRI), The centre is hosted by the Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences.
The primary objective of the research in earthresQue is to develop technologies, systems innovation, and a governance framework towards sustainable management and treatment of wastes and earth materials, building on science-based education and information.
The center focuses on two important components:
Sustainable management and reuse of excess earth materials and wastes.
Sustainable risk reducing solutions for old and future landfills.
The research in the centre benefits from a close collaboration between user partners and researchers to enhance knowledge development that responds to the need of the industry and society.
The Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management (MINA) works with nature and the environment, sustainable use of natural resources, biological and geological processes.
MINA’s employees undertake teaching, research and dissemination within the fields of geology, hydrology and limnology, soil science, environmental chemistry, forestry, ecology, natural resource management, renewable energy, and nature-based tourism.
Our vision is to be a key actor in knowledge production and dissemination, and our goal is to deliver research of high, international quality, and varied and excellent teaching. The faculty’s employees are significant participants within their respective fields of expertise, both nationally and internationally. The faculty is dominated by a vital research culture and high levels of scientific production.
The faculty has about 200 employees, 90 PhD students and 650 students.
Are you eager to strengthen the knowledge and sustainable groundwater use in Norway?
About the position
Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management (MINA) at Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has a vacant four year Postdoctoral–position in hydrogeology.
Hydrogeologists play an important role in strengthening our knowledge on groundwater use in Norway. In Norway, groundwater plays an important role as drinking water, energy supply, for contaminant transport, to sustain ecosystems and in several geotechnical aspects of infrastructure projects, such as slope stability, subsidence, and tunnel leakages. Groundwater also serves as a strategic backup during times of surface water shortage. Hence the competence on hydrogeology is vital in sustaining ecosystems in various settings such as environmental conservation, resource management, and sustainable development. Also globally, the role of a hydrogeologist becomes increasingly critical.
The postdoctoral position consists of approximately 50% research and 50% teaching. The research part is linked to the research-based innovation centre earthresQue [Rescue of earth materials and wastes in the circular economy, www.earthresque.com].
The postdoc will be part of the Geology research group at the Section of Soil and Water Sciences at MINA-NMBU and contribute to the courses in hydrogeology. There are about 20 permanent faculty employees in the section covering a broad field of earth sciences such as soil science, geology, geochemistry, hydrology and limnology.
The earthresQue research group includes several other scientists, and research fellows.
Our vision is to be the leading research and teaching environment in hydrogeology in Norway, and to maintain high international standards in teaching and research.
We seek a hydrogeologist with focus and interests in flow and solute transport in porous or fractured media (saturated or unsaturated) and in-depth knowledge in one or several of the following: numerical modelling, geostatistics, field methods, such as well tests and/or hydrogeophysics.
Main tasks
Teaching hydrogeology courses to undergraduate and/or graduate students (GEO220, GEO300, GEO320). This involves developing course materials, delivering lectures, supervising laboratory and field experiments, and assessing student performance. As well as advising and mentoring graduate students, including master's and doctoral students, in their research projects.
Data Analysis and Modelling: Use statistical and numerical modelling techniques to analyse data and simulate groundwater flow, transport of contaminants, or other hydrogeological processes. This can involve using software such as MODFLOW, MT3Dms, COMSOL Multiphysics, PHREEQC.
You are expected to publish your research findings in peer-reviewed journals and seek external funding to support your research. Involvement and contribution to the earthresQue centre is part of the job. This includes collaboration with researchers (internal and external), and stakeholders involved in earthresQue (www.earthresQue.com)
