Faculty of Science and Technology

The position

A postdoctoral position is available in the Department of Computer Science at UiT The Arctic University of Norway.

The position is a fixed term position for a duration of 4 years. Appointment to the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow is mainly intended to provide qualification for work in top academic positions. It is a prerequisite that the applicant can carry out the project over the full course of the employment period. No person may hold more than one fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the same institution.

The position will additionally be assigned to teaching and related work for UiT in an amount equivalent to a maximum 25 % of a full-time employment. 

Goal: The overriding purpose of this position is to support the department’s research quality in experimental distributed systems areas where the department has ongoing and planned projects. The candidate will particularly contribute broadly to research on systems support for next-generation applications with related master student supervision tasks.

Education ability and interest in advanced distributed systems are key for this position as the candidate will be involved in teaching courses at higher levels in this topic.

Start date: Preferably during summer 2025. The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. The candidate must be able to start in the position in Tromsø within a reasonable time after receiving the offer.

The position's field of research

The candidate will be researching a wide range of fundamental distributed systems problems related to performance, trust, and dependability. Our research is focused on developing and investigating robust and efficient software infrastructures, trusted data management and storage, secure networking, multimedia support, and support for privacy-preserving algorithmic analysis. The focus of this position will be on experimental development and scientific evaluation of concrete software artifacts, and the candidate must demonstrate skills and experiences with architecting, designing, developing, and experimentally evaluating distributed systems. 

The candidate will construct low-level distributed systems computing and storage platforms, particularly in edge computing environments. This research includes collaborating with end-user cohorts, and particularly in two select applied areas.

One is in the sustainable fisheries area related to combating of potential economic crime in commercial fisheries. The other main cohort includes elite soccer athletes. Soccer has been one of our target domains for over a decade, and our current focused attention is on developing artificial intelligence edge computing analytics software targeting precision, efficiency, compliance, and real-time properties.

Project description: 

Applicants must submit a project description outlining ideas for research focus and how this will strengthen the research activity in the research team. The proposal must include a progress plan. The project description must not exceed 2 pages.

Working environment 

The candidate will work in an experimental distributed systems team in the Cyber Security Group researching complex problems in the development of the whole vertical distributed system software stack. The Cyber Security Group carries out experimental distributed systems and undertakes high-impact inter-disciplinary research and innovation at the intersection of computer science, mathematics/statistics, law, sports sciences, psychology, and medicine.

Qualifications

The position requires:

  • A PhD degree in computer science, either completed or submitted for evaluation
  • Documented strong technical skills
  • Solid expertise in developing complex experimental distributed systems.
  • Teaching experience in distributed systems and advanced systems topics are required for this position.
  • Documented fluency and good communication skills in English. Nordic applicants can document their capabilities by attaching their high school diploma.

Candidates in the final stages of a PhD education may still apply if a PhD thesis has been submitted for evaluation within the application deadline. The thesis must be submitted with the application. The candidate must have received a PhD degree before the start-up date of the position.

Desired qualifications:

  • Systems research experience
  • Relevant publications in conferences and journals
  • Experience with distributed systems developed in the select domains 
  • Documented experience in scientific development and evaluation of complex back-end distributed systems, particularly in edge computing domains. 
  • Working knowledge of Norwegian or a Scandinavian language. If the candidate does not document proficiency in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish at level A2, then the doctoral fellow must complete a language course equal to 15 ECTS before the end of the fixed-term period. UiT will facilitate this.

During the assessment emphasis will be put on the candidate’s motivation, potential for research, and personal suitability for the position. We are looking for an interested, active, and highly motivated candidate who enjoys working in collaboration with researchers and students. The position will be involved in inter-disciplinary projects, and close interaction with project participants from other sciences will be required. 

During this assessment process, emphasis will be put on the potential for experimental systems research as shown by the submitted academic works, project description, and documented teaching ability. In addition, we may consider work experience or other activities of significance. 

In the assessment the main emphasis will be attached to the submitted works and the project proposal for the qualifying work. Emphasis shall also be attached to experience from popularization/dissemination and academic policy and administrative activity.

As teaching duties or equivalent work is attached to the position, emphasis will also be attached to teaching experience and qualifications.

Assessment

The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The committee's mandate is to undertake an assessment of the applicants' qualifications based on the written material presented by the applicants, and the detailed description draw up for the position. A copy of the assessment report will be sent to all applicants. 

The applicants who are assessed as best qualified will be called to an interview. The interview should among other things, aim to clarify the applicant’s motivation and personal suitability for the position. A trial lecture may also be held.

The remuneration for Postdoctoral research fellow is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1352. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.
