The Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages (abbreviated IKOS from its Norwegian name) is one of the seven departments at the Faculty of Humanities. The Department has a broad competency in the study of religion and culture and in language based area studies of South Asia, East Asia and the Middle East and North Africa. IKOS also hosts the Oslo School of Environmental Humanities. The Department has several study programmes at both BA and MA levels. Among the Department's 110 employees about 40 are PhD and Postdoctoral Fellows.

Temporary 50 % University Lecturer Position in Japanese Language

Job description

A 3-year temporary 50% position of university lecturer (SKO 1009) in Japanese language is available at the Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages (IKOS), University of Oslo.

The main teaching responsibilities of the university lecturer will be within Japanese language. The person employed must have experience with teaching Japanese language at bachelor level. They will teach Japanese language courses at bachelor level and will be responsible for examinations and grading together with the other language lecturers in Japanese language at the department. Teaching includes both spoken and written Japanese (conversation, translation, grammar, vocabulary etc.), as well as exercises and testing.

The teaching will normally be at bachelor level. Within the normal duties and academic competence, the person appointed may also be directed to work outside his/her department. The appointment is made on condition that changes to the subject area and tasks may be determined by the employer.

Qualification requirements

  • Applicants must have a master’s degree or equivalent academic qualifications with a specialization in Japanese language
  • Applicants should be a native speaker of Japanese or have near native competence in Japanese
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Personal suitability and motivation for the position
  • Good teamwork skills and experience

In the evaluation of the applicants, emphasis will be placed on:

  • Pedagogical qualifications and practice, mainly from universities or higher education institutions, see How to document your pedagogical skills
  • Applicants with skills in a Scandinavian language may be given preference
  • Professional competence in and relevant contributions to the field

The successful candidate who at the time of appointment cannot document basic teaching qualifications will be required to obtain such qualifications within a two-year period.
