Simula Research Laboratory invites applications for one permanent position as (Senior) Research Engineer with emphasis on FAIR data management in connection to research and innovation projects. The workplace will be at Simula’s premises in downtown Oslo, Norway.
Simula: solving problems, making a difference.
Simula’s mission is to solve important and fundamental problems of science and engineering, with the main goal of benefiting society and industry. We do this by performing excellent research in five select research areas of ICT, by developing our people, and by spinning out applicable results into profitable startups.
Join Simula as a (Senior) Research Engineer for permanent role in FAIR Data Management
Work Description
Simula conducts a wide range of research and innovation projects, from basic and applied research funded by the EU and the Research Council of Norway to contract research funded by commercial clients and collaborators. Data management and stewardship based on FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable) principles are becoming increasingly important across the different research areas we are involved in. The successful applicant will be a key resource for addressing data-oriented challenges across several areas.
To begin with, we will need your expertise and experience to successfully deliver a collection of ongoing projects funded by Horizon Europe and the European Space Agency through 2026-27. In parallel, you are expected to get to know the different research departments at Simula and contribute to the development of successful project proposals for the future, thereby contributing to Simula’s basis for reproducible research. The existing project portfolio requires insight in FAIR principles and tools, and in particular for effective management of geospatial data sets used, e.g., in climate modelling. Looking further ahead, you will be involved in activities in other application areas, in particular related to healthcare research and precision medicine. Your competence in FAIR data management needs to be suitable for development of technical solutions and tools, as well as for education of researchers and domain experts who want to bring FAIR practices into their work. In particular, one of the ongoing projects is a multidisciplinary effort towards transforming data into actionable knowledge to shape climate adaptation strategies.
Development of advanced software tools based on novel methods and algorithms stands central to all of our research departments, with topics spanning numerical simulation methods based on physics, machine learning and AI, requirements engineering, model-based engineering, software testing and analysis, software security, data-driven software engineering, intelligent test automation, quantum-based software engineering, performance modelling in HPC, processor-specific code optimizations, code synthesis, and many more.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate for this Research Engineer position should have a master’s or PhD degree in Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Scientific Computing, or a research discipline that relies on computer-based modelling fueled by data. A solid combination of PhD-level education and experience qualify for the level of Senior Research Engineer.
We are interested in young talents and encourage master’s level candidates with an appropriate background, experience and skillset to apply. The academic credentials should be combined with a solid practical background, including advanced software development skills and successful technology transfer experiences.
The candidate should be able to work in a collaborative environment, with a strong commitment to reaching assigned objectives and achieving excellence. In particular, it is required that the candidate will collaborate with researchers, both internally and externally, and possibly with industry, SMEs, entrepreneurs, and public partners on short and long-term projects.
Background knowledge and/or previous experience in the following areas, though not mandatory, will be considered very favorably:
Strong competence and experience with FAIR data management;
Knowledge of one or more types of domain-specific data, in particular geospatial data and/or biomedical data;
Software development in collaborative teams;
Development expertise in several programming languages, including Python;
Good knowledge of software engineering methods, tools, and practices;
Advanced use of databases, cloud solutions, computational resources.
