The position will be allocated to the One Health/Ecophysiology research group, as part of an ongoing research project on semi-domesticated reindeer (2021-2025)
About the position
A two years employment as a post doc.
The position will be allocated to the One Health/Ecophysiology research group, as part of an ongoing research project on semi-domesticated reindeer (2021-2025):
Animal welfare, behaviour, health and sustainability – the effects of feeding on reindeer and reindeer herding (WelFed).
About 120 000 semi-domesticated reindeer are using 40% of the land of Norway, and reindeer herding is a corner stone of the Sami culture and traditions as well as an important livelihood. Traditional reindeer herding, based exclusively on natural pastures and traditional migration patterns is transitioning towards an increasing degree of supplementary- or full-ration feeding. This is a direct response from the herders to mitigate climate change (e.g., ice-locked winter pastures) and fragmentation and loss of pastureland, and the feeding practice may change the reindeer industry in fundamental ways. This project will therefore investigate short- and long-term effects of different feeding-regimes for semi-domesticated reindeer. We will focus on effects on animal welfare and behaviour, health and diseases as well as societal and cultural aspects of this transition. This project will create new knowledge for reindeer herders, management bodies, and politicians to not only better maintain good animal health and welfare today but to also be prepared for climate change and the future. The WelFed project will require a multidisciplinary approach, including veterinary medicine, infection biology, ecology, animal welfare, and social science.
We are seeking a Post Doc research scientist to work in the One Health/Ecophysiology research group at Campus Evenstad. The group has a long standing and merited experience with wildlife management, chemical immobilization, ecophysiology and infectious diseases among many species and populations of wildlife in the northern regions, including semi-domesticated reindeer.
The Post Doc position at Evenstad will be focused on infection biology, but the successful applicant should also be prepared to work with a variety of themes and people of varying backgrounds both nationally and internationally. This position will involve fieldwork with herds of semi-domesticated reindeer in Norway and Sweden, as well as setting up and maintaining laboratory facilities for the described activities at Campus Evenstad. Samples from reindeer will be analyzed for exposure to infectious agents as potential reindeer pathogens and for pathogens of zoonotic interest.
