About the Faculty of Landscape and Society

The Faculty of Landscape and Society is home to some of Norway's foremost academic environments within international environment and development studies, public health science, landscape architecture, landscape engineering, urban and regional planning, property development and property law. The Faculty has 1300 students and 180 employees divided into five departments and a Faculty administration. It offers popular, forward-focused Bachelor, Master’s and PhD programmes. The Faculty is interdisciplinary and works with sustainable social development, both nationally and internationally.

About the position

The Department of International Environment and Development Studies (Noragric), Faculty of Landscape and Society, has a vacancy for an Associate Professorship in International Relations.

We are seeking an International Relations scholar with a demonstrated capacity for theoretically advanced and empirically grounded research together with exemplary teaching skills to join us at Noragric. The position will strengthen Noragric’s research and education in International Relations and contribute to academic development at the intersection of International Relations with the fields of Environment and Development Studies. The successful candidate is required to teach in International Relations at the Bachelors and Masters level, support the administration of educational programs, and to supervise students across Noragric’s study programmes.

In addition, the successful candidate will be responsible for developing new research projects and securing external funding.

The successful candidate is expected to be regularly present at the Department.

The Department’s Master of Science programme in International Relations is the only one in Norway. It is complemented at Noragric by four other degree programmes: a Bachelor of Science in International Environment and Development Studies, a Master of Science in International Environment Studies, a Master of Science in Global Development Studies, and a Doctor of Philosophy programme in International Environment and Development Studies.

Main tasks

  • Initiate and perform high quality education and research
  • Develop, teach, and administer courses in International Relations (including core courses on IR theory) at the interface with Environment and Development Studies
  • Supervise Bachelors, Masters, and PhD theses
  • Initiate, acquire and conduct research projects with external funding (for example from the Norwegian Research Council, and/or European Research Council)
  • Publish research and participate in academic conferences
  • Contribute to administrative duties at the department and faculty
  • Collaborate with others within the department, faculty and university
  • Develop or participate in national and international networks

Competence:

Required qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in International Relations, Political Science, Development Studies, or other disciplines related to International Relations
  • Demonstrated ability to teach, supervise and conduct research in International Relations from a critical perspective
  • Demonstrated ability to work across disciplines, and specifically to engage perspectives, themes and topics from Development and Environment Studies
  • Experience in securing and/or working as part of externally funded research projects, eg funded from EU and the Norwegian Research Council
  • Demonstrated record of excellent academic publications
  • Connections to professional networks nationally and internationally
  • Excellence in written and spoken English

Desirable qualifications:

  • Competence in engagements with security and conflict/post-conflict scholarship
  • Motivation to work in interdisciplinary teams and on the themes of the Department’s research clusters
  • Good collaboration and communication skills
  • Research experience from the Global South
  • Ability to motivate and engage students and colleagues
  • Experience with popular research dissemination and communication
  • Willingness to lead and contribute to the Department’s academic programmes and to contribute to performing common tasks and duties
  • Willingness to contribute to fulfilling the Department’s and the Faculty’s strategic priorities
  • Excellence in written and spoken Norwegian

Personal suitability will be given weight.

The administrative language at universities in Norway is Norwegian. It is therefore an advantage to have good written and spoken knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language. If a successful candidate is not fluent in a Scandinavian language at the time of the appointment, they will be expected to learn sufficient Norwegian to be able to participate actively in all functions the position may involve within three years of their appointment.

If the person appointed does not have formal competence in pedagogics, s/he is obliged to complete a course in university pedagogics within two years following the appointment.

Remuneration and further information

The position is placed in the government pay scale at code 1011, Associate Professor, wage framework 24, salary grade 65-77 (NOK 586 500 – 744 600, depending on qualifications
