The Department of Pharmacy has 130 employees. We have an active research and innovation environment based on independent research in pharmaceutical topics. The Department of Pharmacy is responsible for the popular master's degree program in pharmacy and has 350 competent and committed students.
Pharmaceutical related research and education forms the base of all activities at the Department of Pharmacy. The science of pharmacy lies in the interface between the natural sciences, pharmaceutical technology, health related topics and social sciences. This interdisciplinarity is reflected both in our study programmes and in our research. In the planned life science building at the University of Oslo, closer collaboration with health enterprises, local government and the business sector will enhance quality and relevance in research and education of the future labour force. The building will be the heart of the first innovation district in Norway – Oslo Science City. The Department of Pharmacy will move into the new Life Science building in 2026.
About the position
The Department of Pharmacy at the University of Oslo is seeking a highly motivated, dynamic, and innovative researcher with strong collaborative and educational skills for a full-time Associate Professor position in the Section for Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Biosciences.
The Department fosters a strong interdisciplinary environment that encompasses the central areas of the pharmaceutical field. Cutting-edge research, extensive national and international collaborations, and a leading master program in Pharmacy position us as main contributors in shaping the future of pharmacy in Norway. The Department emphasizes collaboration with healthcare providers, regulatory authorities, and pharmaceutical industries, including startup companies.
The Section for Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Biosciences is one of the three sections at the Department of Pharmacy and is comprised of strong research groups specializing in basic pharmacology, pharmacotherapy, clinical pharmacy, and pharmaceutical microbiology. The Section offers a vibrant and dynamic academic environment, ideal for ambitious researchers. We are currently seeking an associate professor in the fields of basic pharmacology, and pharmacotherapy or clinical pharmacy to strengthen one or more of the research groups in pharmacology (MetHealth, NeuroTox, Clinical Pharmacy).
Job description
The pharmaceutical biotech industry, university hospital, and academia cluster in the Oslo area is expanding, with Oslo Science City and the upcoming Life Science building playing crucial roles in this growth. The Department of Pharmacy will relocate to this new building in 2026, offering exceptional opportunities for groundbreaking research and innovation. Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, the building is equipped to break down traditional barriers between foundational sciences like biomedicine, pharmacy, and chemistry. By incorporating computational science, biotechnology, nanotechnology, and artificial intelligence, it will create a pioneering environment for research, education, and innovation.
The ideal candidate will significantly contribute to the scientific community in the new Life Science building by forging the future of pharmaceutical science at a high international level, specifically by strengthening the research within basic pharmacology, and pharmacotherapy or clinical pharmacy. Documented interdisciplinary and international cooperation is highly desirable.
Teaching is an important part of the position, and the overall workload of teaching and research is typically divided equally between teaching and research. The successful candidate should be able to teach at all levels of the five-years study program in pharmacy, including master- and PhD levels. The position will entail teaching in various areas of pharmacology, including basic pharmacology, pharmacotherapy, clinical pharmacy and clinical drug trials to students at all levels, including lectures, lab/group teaching, and supervision.
Additional responsibilities include leading and initiating research-based teaching, supervising researchers, participating in examination-related duties, and undertaking administrative tasks as required. The successful candidate may also be assigned other teaching and administrative responsibilities by the Department or the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
Qualification requirements
Required qualifications
- The successful applicant must hold a PhD preferentially in pharmacology, clinical pharmacy or basic medical sciences and possess a robust scientific track record within this research area. If the candidate's PhD is in a different field, they must have a documented, strong scientific track record in pharmacology following the completion of their doctoral degree.
- Master’s degree in pharmacy, medicine (MD), or equivalent education must be formally documented.
- Documented independent research experience after the PhD degree, including scientific production in international peer review journals. Scientific qualifications will play a major role, and the main emphasis will be on the candidate’s scientific production from the last five years.
- Documented success in acquisition of external funding.
- The successful applicant must be able to teach at all levels and to supervise Master and PhD students, especially in pharmacotherapy.
- Pedagogical qualifications and teaching and supervision experience at all levels will be an important factor in the evaluation process and must be well documented in a teaching portfolio. The applicant must describe her/his qualifications in view of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) framework which includes:
- Focus on student learning.
- A clear development over time.
- A researching approach.
- A collegial attitude and practice.
- The successful applicant must have fluent oral and written communication skills both in a Scandinavian language and in English. The candidate applying for the position must be proficient in one of the Scandinavian languages (Norwegian, Swedish, or Danish) at the beginning of their appointment. To ensure that students acquire adequate professional communication skills in Norwegian, as required by Norwegian authorities, the program will be taught in Norwegian.
- Documented knowledge of European therapy guidelines and traditions is required. Strong candidates familiar only with American therapy guidelines and traditions may also be considered but must familiarize themselves with the Norwegian system upon employment.
The successful candidate who at the time of appointment cannot document sufficient teaching qualifications (minimum formal requirement is a 200-hour pedagogical program) will be required to obtain such qualifications within a two-year period.

- Experience with planning and conducting of clinical trials as well as regulatory experience in drug development.
- Independent teaching responsibility experience.
- Documented experience in research dissemination.
- Other qualifying activities such as innovation, patenting and research management.
