Associate professor in organic chemistry

Deadline: 10.06.2025

Universitetet i Oslo

The University of Oslo is Norway’s oldest and highest rated institution of research and education with 26 500 students and 7 200 employees. Its broad range of academic disciplines and internationally esteemed research communities make UiO an important contributor to society.

The Department of Chemistry is Norway's largest institution within research and education in chemistry. Our research excels internationally and we educate students to a wide variety of jobs in industry, academia, research institutions, schools and public administration. Our research ranges from the fundamentals of chemistry, including synthesis and characterization of compounds and materials, to applied science within the environment, health, energy, and materials. The Department has extensive contacts with industry, research, and educational institutions domestically and abroad. The Department of Chemistry has a dedicated own school laboratory serving as a resource for teachers, public outreach, and the didactics of chemistry.

The Department of Chemistry takes part in the Center for Materials Science and Nanotechnology, which focuses on renewable energy, materials science, and nanotechnology. The center is an interdisciplinary collaboration between four research sections in physics and chemistry. Moreover, we are hosting the Hylleraas Center of Excellence, which aims to understand, interpret, and predict new chemistry, physics, and biology through development and application of advanced computer simulations. In 2026, the Department of Chemistry will move to the new Life Science Building with the School of Pharmacy, the Department of Biosciences, the Norwegian Centre for Molecular Biosciences and Medicine as well as parts of Oslo University Hospital, the Institute of Oral Biology, and the Faculty of Medicine (for more details: (Livsvitenskapsbygget - Universitetet i Oslo). In the Life Science Building, we will have access to state-of-the-art laboratories, research infrastructure and teaching facility. There will be strong opportunities for cross disciplinary and collaborative research, and we expect a strong interaction with the School of Pharmacy on research and teaching in organic chemistry.

About the position

The Department of Chemistry at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo, has a vacant Associate Professor position in organic chemistry. We are looking for a person who will strengthen our profile within organic chemistry. The person should have relevant expertise in organic chemistry, and a strong dedication to both teaching and research.

More about the position

The Department seeks a person who will be a potential scientific leader in organic chemistry, and who has clear educational and research visions, and abilities to establish and lead research projects. The candidate should be a chemist in an early stage of his/her career, who will contribute to strengthen our research and education within one or more of the following areas: organic synthesis (including synthesis in the direction of medicinal chemistry) and reactivity; organometallic chemistry; and homogeneous catalysis.

The majority of research within organic chemistry at the Department is organized within the Section for Catalysis and Organic Chemistry. Existing activities within organic chemistry are focused on the development of new tools in molecular chemistry, organometallic chemistry, hybrid materials, catalysis, structure and spectroscopy, and synthesis in fundamental and applied research in a context of sustainable development. Additional interdisciplinary activities are carried out in collaboration with other Sections at the Department. The current research environment is characterized by strong transversal research activities and inter-team interactions.

The Department of Chemistry manages the Oslo NMR Center, which is a national research infrastructure for NMR spectroscopy. The Section has a clear philosophy for internal collaborations – each team member contributes towards common goals and ambitions by contributing to joint projects and activities, while at the same time maintaining and developing his/her own core activities.

The successful applicant may furthermore be required to take on other teaching duties and administrative tasks, by request from the Department or the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
