Applications are invited for a position as Researcher in Examining Structure / Function of Cardiac Muscle Cells to be based at the Institute for Experimental Medical Research (IEMR), University of Oslo.

The position will be 2 years in duration, with possibility for prolongation. Funding will be provided from a Consolidator Grant from the European Research Council and from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Oslo. IEMR employs ≈ 70 people and consists of six main research groups with backgrounds in various fields of molecular biology, physiology and cardiology. The project will be conducted in the group of Professor William Louch. The group is part of the Center for Heart Failure Research which promotes extensive collaboration and provides a fruitful research environment within the Oslo region.

More about the position

Contraction and relaxation of cardiac muscle cells, and thus the whole heart, are critically dependent on dyads. These structures allow efficient control of calcium release into the cytosol, and also its removal. Dyads are formed gradually during development and break down during disease. However, the precise nature of dyadic structure is unclear, as are the triggers and consequences of altering dyadic integrity during diseases such as heart failure.

The present project is aimed at examining these questions, and will employ advanced cellular imaging techniques (super-resolution and electron microscopy), together with experiments focused on cellular and molecular biology. The project has highly qualified national and international collaborators.

Qualification requirements

We are looking for talented and highly motivated candidates of all nationalities who have a keen interest in cellular and cardiovascular research. The applicant is expected to hold a PhD degree in human biology, cell biology or a related field and have a good command of English.
