Two-year research fellow position: digital distribution (streaming) and reception of film and TV series in France

A researcher position is available for at the Department of Information Science and Media Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Bergen, Norway. The position is part of the EU CHANSE funded project DIGISCREENS: Identities and Democratic Values on European Digital Screens: Distribution, Reception, and Representation. The position is for a fixed-term period of two years.

About the project/work tasks:

DIGISCREENS is a three-year international collaborative project led by Dr. Maud Ceuterick. The project focuses on five European countries: France, Spain, Sweden, Norway and Lithuania. The project’s objective is to analyse recent practices of digital distribution of global and national platforms (such as Netflix, HBO, Disney+, France TV, Salto) and study how they affect the representation and the reception of identities and democratic values.

The researcher will conduct interviews with members of the industry, perform film analysis and lead focus groups and interview with audiences in France in order to formulate answers to the project’s research questions. The successful candidate will develop a more detailed research design in collaboration with DIGISCREENS’s project leader to analyse: 1) the practices of digital distribution of film and TV in France, 2) the representation of gender, class, age, sexuality and of democratic values such as inclusivity, equality and solidarity in streamed films and TV series, and 3) the reception of such values and traits of identities by French audiences.

Research outputs should include peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, conference presentations, and participating to the organization of one or more workshops and an international conference. The researcher will form a local team with the project leader and a research assistant and will join an international team consisting of 4 principal investigators and 4 postdoctoral researchers located in Norway, Spain, Sweden and Lithuania. The successful applicant will be expected to relocate to Bergen, and undertake fieldwork in France. Funding will cover fieldwork, research visits and conference presentations.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • The applicant must hold a PhD in film or media studies, digital culture, anthropology or related discipline, or be expected to complete their doctoral thesis before the start of employment. Expected start for the position is October 2023.
  • working with film/TV production or distribution either as researcher or working in the industry. Experience in a French context is preferred.
  • The applicant must be able to work independently and in a structured manner, as well as have the ability to cooperate with others.
  • The position requires proficiency in both written and oral English and French.
