The position

A position as Researcher in Computational Chemistry is available at the Department of Chemistry. The position is affiliated with the research group CHOCO and is expected to commence as soon as possible. The position is for 2 years.

The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø.

The position’s field of research

The candidate will use quantum chemical methods to model molecules and reactions and to propose promising new molecules for activation of CO2, especially towards enantioselective carbon-carbon bond formation. The work will be performed in close collaboration with experimental organic chemists. The candidate will be located at the Dept. of Chemistry and will become a member of an enthusiastic interdisciplinary research team, which combines computational and organic chemistry tools in the development of novel catalysts (group website).

The candidate can expect to be involved in the supervision of Master and PhD students in the group and may participate in teaching (up to 20%) at the Department of Chemistry.

Qualifications

For appointment as researcher 1109, the applicant is required to hold either a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree.

The successful candidate must:

  • have a PhD degree in theoretical or computational chemistry or equivalent
  • possess experience with quantum chemical modelling of chemical reactions (preferably homogeneous catalysis)
  • have well-developed critical thinking and writing skills
  • have the ability to work independently and the motivation to solve challenging chemical problems
  • have proficiency in both written and oral English

Desired qualifications:

  • Experience with ab initio molecular dynamics or QM/MM is an advantage.
  • Experience with enantioselective systems is beneficial.
  • In-depth knowledge about organometallic chemistry is an advantage.
  • Teaching and/or supervision experience is an advantage.

Qualification with a PhD is required before commencement in the position. If you’re at the final stages of your PhD, you may still apply if you have submitted your PhD thesis for doctoral degree evaluation within the application deadline. You must submit the thesis with your application. You must have dissertated before the start-up date of the position.

Work- and salary conditions

The successful candidate must be willing to get involved in the ongoing development of their department and the university as a whole.

The remuneration for Researcher is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1109. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.

  • Diploma from a Norwegian upper secondary school with both spoken and written English (140 hours)
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
  • IELTS (International English Testing Service)
  • Completed university degree in the field of English language or literature
  • One years completed university studies in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK or USA, for which English was the language of instructions.

Assessment

The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The committee's mandate is to undertake an assessment of the applicants' qualifications on the basis of the written material presented by the applicants, and the detailed description drawn up for the position.

The applicants who are assessed as best qualified will be called to an interview. The interview shall among other things, aim to clarify the applicants personal suitability for the position and motivations. A trial lecture may also be held.
