Simula Metropolitan Center for Digital Engineering is a research unit that is jointly owned by Simula Research Laboratory and Oslo Metropolitan University (OsloMet). It is the home of Simula’s research activities on networks and communications, machine learning and IT management, and it is OsloMet’s strategic partner in research, PhD and MS education in digital engineering. SimulaMet is organized as a limited company and is part of the Simula Research Laboratory group.

Research Scientist Position at the Machine Intelligence Department - Simula Metropolitan Center for Digital Engineering

The Machine Intelligence Department (MIND) at SimulaMet in Oslo has an opening for an outstanding computer science researcher in data mining/machine learning. Our research at MIND focuses on advancing data science by developing novel methods/algorithms to address challenges in real-world problems. This research scientist position will involve interactions with multidisciplinary groups consisting of applied mathematics, computer science, systems biology, and clinical researchers. Requirements

We are looking for highly motivated researchers in pursuit of excellence and impact. The position requires a PhD in computer science or a related scientific discipline. Other required qualifications include (1) a strong publication record in data mining/machine learning, primarily in low-rank approximations, and hands-on experience in real data analysis proved by publications, (2) at least two years of postdoctoral researcher experience, and preferably at least few years of experience after the postdoctoral period, or equivalent experience as a research scientist, (3) the ability to work with multidisciplinary teams, (4) previous experience in writing grant applications and/or attracting research funding, (5) independence and critical thinking demonstrated by publications that do not include PhD advisors, and (6) excellent communication skills (in English).

Desired qualifications include familiarity with (1) tensor decompositions, numerical linear algebra and numerical optimization, (2) excellent software development skills proved by previously released software packages.

Conditions of employment

This is a permanent researcher position that comes with a competitive salary and a generous start-up package that involves one PhD position. The place of work is Oslo, Norway. Besides conducting research and supervising junior researchers, the candidate is expected to apply for funding and contribute to teaching activities (when relevant).
