The Department of archaeology, conservation and history (IAKH) is comprised of three disciplines which in different ways study the past. The department has internationally oriented archaeologists, the only conservation program in Norway and the biggest group of historians in Scandinavia. The department has close to 100 employees, including non-permanent research fellows. The study programs span archaeology from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages, object and paintings conservation, and history from Antiquity to the present age.

Job description

A position as a researcher (SKO 1109) is available at the Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History, University of Oslo.

The position is associated with the project Symbolic Resources and Political Structures on the Periphery: Legitimization of the Elites in Poland and Norway, c. 1000-1300, which is funded by the GRIEG-programme of the Research Council of Norway

The researcher will be assigned to co-write two articles with Polish scholars on secular aspects of elite legitimation in Norway and Poland in the period c. 1000-1300, where the researcher will have a main responsibility for covering the Norwegian part of the issue.

The researcher will be expected to cooperate closely with the other participants in the project, which includes participation in meetings, workshops and conferences. The researcher will be based in Oslo.

The position is basically full-time for a period of 13,5 months, but the successful candidate can choose to work part time, 50 % for 27 months.

The successful candidate is expected to become part of the research environment/network of the department and contribute to its development.

Qualification requirements

  • PhD or equivalent academic qualifications with a specialization in Nordic medieval history
  • Demonstrated research competence in Norwegian medieval history
  • The candidate's research project must be closely connected to the main project
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English and a Scandinavian language
  • Personal suitability and motivation for the position
  • The doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Appointment is dependent on the public defense of the doctoral thesis being approved.

In the evaluation of the applications, emphasis will be placed on:

  • The project’s scientific merit, research-related relevance and innovation
  • The applicant’s estimated academic and personal ability to carry out the project within the allotted time frame and contribute to the main project
  • Good co-operative skills, and the ability to successfully join in academic collaboration within and across disciplines

The project description must include a description of the applicant's approach to the theme of how secular elites in Norway in the period c. 1000-1300 legitimized their power and status. The project description must also present a feasible progress plan. It is expected that the applicant will be able to complete the project during the period of appointment
