Innovation researcher

There is a vacancy open for a temporary 50% researcher position in Innovation at MediaFutures: Research Centre for Responsible Media Technology & Innovation at the Department of Information Science and Media Studies, University of Bergen. This is a temporary project position for 2 years. 

MediaFutures is a centre for research-based innovation at the Department for Information Science and Media Studies, University of Bergen, located at Media City Bergen. The centre is a part of the Norwegian Research Council’s Research-based Innovation scheme. MediaFutures is cooperating with industry partners from news media and media technology on research topics like media experiences, recommender technology, content production and analysis, content interaction and availability, and Norwegian language technology. The primary objective of MediaFutures is to generate substantial innovation and value creation for the Norwegian news media and media-tech industry, and to empower them to solve profound global, industrial and democratic challenges, through long-term research into responsible media technologies. The results are new digital tools, analytical methods and content types for the future of media. The centre also performs research training within media technology and innovation. This creates outputs such as new patents, prototypes, research articles and software, as well as innovative start-up companies.

About the project/work tasks:

The researcher will be responsible for working in collaboration with the work packages on the delivery of the innovation results in MediaFutures. Work packages in MediaFutures are teams up to a size of 15 people (researcher & industry) with a background in media tech. Work packages work on certain tasks regularly, are led by a Professor and Industry leader and create outputs such as novel methods, scientific reports, and articles, as well as software or patents. 

The overall goal of this position is to strengthen the centre in its ability to deliver on its innovation results such as spin-offs, prototypes, demos, etc. This position will play an important bridging role between research and industry partners in the centre, and it is expected to actively contribute with its research to an enhanced collaborative innovation environment. 

A further exciting task for this position is that the researcher will develop novel research and innovation grant applications on national and EU level for the benefit of the partners involved in the centre. 

Finally, the researcher will also be concerned with admin tasks. The researcher will be the main responsible for fostering TTO processes in the centre and will coordinate innovation events and meetings.

The personal manager of this position is the centre director at MediaFutures.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • The applicant should hold a PhD in any relevant discipline beneficial to this position.
  • Experience with or knowledge about innovation theory and methodologies.
  • Experience with research methods are required.
  • Knowledge about the media tech industry is a requirement.
  • Good communication and presentation skills are required.
  • A good command in both written and oral English.
  • Working in a team as well as independently and in a structured manner is a requirement.
  • Personal qualities will be emphasized.

  • Salary at NOK 624 500 per year (code 1109) on the government salary scale upon appointment (equivalent to pay grade 64). A higher salary may be considered for a particularly well qualified applicant.
