UiT – The Arctic University of Norway, Department of Pharmacy, Microbial Pharmacology and Population Biology Research Group (MicroPop) has a research position available as part of the FRIPRO project “RESIST: Revealing ecological drivers of horizontal gene transfer and emerging phage resistance”.
The position is available for a period of 2 years, with commencement from February 2026.
This research project will encompass the study of how natural transformation shapes the evolution of phage resistance. The researcher will explore how the bacterial immune system has evolved, focusing on the acquisition of defence mechanisms though horizontal gene transfer (HGT) in naturally competent Acinetobacter baumannii.
Qualification requirements
The successful applicant must have completed a PhD in biological/natural sciences and should have experience in the following areas: microbiological and molecular techniques including culture-based methods, cloning work, genetic engineering using CRIPSR-based techniques, PCR, sequencing, and genomics. It will also be advantageous for applicants to have experience with unconventional (i.e. non-model) bacterial species. Experience as a supervisor will also be considered as beneficial.
Excellent oral and written English skills are required. Some proficiency in Norwegian is advantageous.
The successful applicant should be able to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. When evaluating applicants, emphasis will be on experience, motivation, and personal suitability as per the qualification requirements.

Remuneration of researcher positions is in accordance with the appropriate State salary scale code 1109 Researcher. A compulsory contribution of 2% to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.
