Senior research engineer: integration of machine learning in radiological workflows

Deadline: 15.01.2021

Mohn Medical Imaging and Visualization Centre

Haukeland University Hospital employs about 12.000 people and almost 600.000 patients are treated there annually. Research is a core activity at the hospital. To boost interdisciplinary research activities in multimodal human imaging and visualization, the Mohn Medical Imaging and Visualization Centre (MMIV) was established in 2017 through strategic funding from the Trond Mohn Foundation, the Haukeland University Hospital, and the University of Bergen.

MMIV currently hosts and nourishes numerous research projects led by scientists from Haukeland University Hospital, the University of Bergen (Faculty of Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Psychology) and the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences. The center has successfully attracted funding from multiple sources, enabling the hiring of several new PhD candidates and postdocs at the centre. MMIV aspires to be at the international forefront of research and development aimed at integrating and evaluating state-of-the-art imaging technologies in established image diagnostics workflows. Through ongoing development of a novel research information system that combines a picture archive and communication system (PACS) and an electronic data capture system (EDC) system led by MMIV, and the central role of MMIV in the Western Norway Regional Health Authority AI committee working to pilot commercial AI support systems, the center plays a leading role in activities related to AI in radiological imaging in Norway.

Department of Radiology, Haukeland University Hospital

Senior Research Engineer, MMIV

Due to successful funding from the The Research Council of Norway (RCN) for the project (within the program Innovation Project for the Public Sector) on Workflow-Integrated Machine Learning (WIML), a three-year, full-time (100%) project position as senior research engineer is planned. This project position will be at Mohn Medical Imaging and Visualization Centre (MMIV, https://www.mmiv.no), Department of Radiology, Haukeland University Hospital.

The person undertaking the position will work in the RCN funded project on Workflow-Integrated Machine Learning (WIML), constructing the infrastructure necessary to run state-of-the-art image processing and analysis algorithms based on machine learning in the established research workflow in the Western Norway Regional Health Authority. In particular, the successful applicant will be a core contributor to ongoing work integrating image processing, hospital PACS/RIS and EDC, and the clinical workflow supporting currently 60 different regional research projects, including COVID-19 related data captures.

In addition, the scientist undertaking the position is expected to support MMIV’s core activities and contribute to the strategic development of MMIV.

Qualifications

Applicants must hold a MSc degree in computer science, software engineering, statistics, or a related field. A PhD in one of these fields is considered an advantage. Successful candidates must have experience in scripting languages like Python and Bash, and experience in a C/C++ like programming language (Rust, Go, etc.). Documented experience with hospital workflows and an interest in tasks related to data transfers using DICOM and DICOM meta-data are also required.

Experience with packages like ITK/GDCM/DCMTK and their integration into Python is considered positive. Experience with writing single-page web applications using JavaScript/jQuery and visualization libraries such as Three.js and D3.js as well as PHP as a server side backend is also considered an advantage, as the work involves the creation of data representations for large research studies. Data management skills using tools such as R/dplyr etc. and Python/Pandas are considered a benefit.

Proficiency in communication with medical experts and domain experts from imaging and specifically radiology is important. The successful candidate may also participate in writing scientific papers presenting work at the center.
