Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in ICT - Internet of Things (IOT) and Machine Learning (ML) for Healthcare

About the position

A fixed-term 100% position is available at the University of Agder (UiA), Faculty of Engineering and Science as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in ICT, affiliated to the Department of Information and Communication Technology, for a period of two years. The position is located at Campus Grimstad. The starting date is 1 September 2021 or upon agreement with the Faculty.

The position is associated with the “Orchestrating Internet of Things and Machine Learning for Early Risk Detection to Ensure Inpatients Safety (StaySafe)” project which is funded by the Research Council of Norway through the HELSEVEL program for supporting innovations in the public sector. The main objective of the StaySafe project is to develop a smart monitoring and decision making support system, which will be built based on non-intrusive IoT devices and ML aided predictive analytics, for behavior analysis and prevention of agitation and accidents for inpatients in hospital healthcare. The partners in this project include Sørlandet Hospital (SSHF), UiA, Egde Consulting AS, and two international partners.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will perform cutting-edge applied research on data collection and data analysis based on heterogeneous IoT devices, as well as ML algorithms for mental health inpatient behavior analysis and risk prediction. The key tasks of this position include building IoT and sensor network infrastructure for data collection and access, system development, data fusion, and developing applied ML algorithms.

Required qualifications

  • Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, ICT, or a similar/related field and documented competence in areas relevant to the position. Recent Ph.D. graduates with industrial experience are preferable.
  • English proficiency, both written and oral.
  • The successful candidate must have education and/or expertise in one or more of the following areas:
    • Wireless sensor networks and IoT
    • Protocol design and system integration for wireless networks
    • Data analysis and machine learning

Expected skills and experiences

  • Excellent knowledge on wireless networks in general, especially protocol design for energy efficient wireless sensor and IoT networks
  • Strong programming skills in MATLAB, Python, Javascript/Typescript, and JAVA
  • Experiences in system development and integration, sensor fusion, data analysis, and machine learning
  • Familiarity with web development frameworks such as Spring and React
  • A strong record of publications in top-tier journals and flagship conferences

The position is remunerated according to the State Salary Scale, salary plan 17.510, code 1352 Post-Doctoral Research Fellow, NOK 545 300 - 566 700 gross salary per year. Higher salary grades may be considered for particularly well-qualified applicants. A compulsory pension contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the pay according to current statutory provisions.
