The Norwegian School of Hotel Management, as part of the Faculty of Social Sciences, offers study programs and carries out research within Hospitality and Tourism. The academic community at the department is unique and is the leading research and expertise center within its academic fields throughout the Nordic countries. It is also a member of the worldwide network Hotel Schools of Distinction. The department has a collaboration with the hotel and tourism industries. There are currently 30 employees and 550 students at the institute.

The University of Stavanger invites applications for a research fellowship in management at Faculty of Social Sciences, The Norwegian School of Hotel Management .

This is a trainee position that will give promising researchers an opportunity for academic development leading to a doctoral degree. The appointment is for three years with research duties exclusively. The position is vacant from 15 August 2019.

The research fellow will work on a project focusing on responsible leadership in the service sector. Responsible leadership is a strategic priority area at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Norwegian School of Hotel Management. Responsible leadership has gained a lot of attention, but accumulated research is scarce. The primary aim is to provide a synthesis of the evidence of responsible leadership related to contemporary organizations by exploring definitions, core attributes and critical conditions. The second aim is to increase our understanding of antecedents and consequences of responsible leadership. The candidate will have the possibility to influence the content and the direction of their PhD-project within the broader limits given above.

For this position, we are seeking applicants with a strong academic background with a five-year master degree within marketing, business administration, psychology, sociology, hospitality management, or tourism management, preferably acquired recently; or possess corresponding qualifications that could provide the basis for successfully completing a doctorate. If the grade for your master’s thesis and the weighted average grade of your master’s degree individually are equivalent to or better than grade B, you are among the ones we are looking for. Your application is also welcome if you are finishing your master degree in the spring of 2019. Applicants with an educational background from institutions using another grade scale than the A-F scale are requested to enclose a confirmed conversion scale that portrays how their grades compares to the Norwegian A-F-scale.

In evaluating the applicants, emphasis will be placed on their potential for research in the field, and also their personal prerequisites for completing a doctorate. The position is suitable for candidates who can work both independently and as a member of a team, be creative and innovative. For this particular project, we are looking for candidates that have a good command of Norwegian or another Nordic language, as well as a very good command of both oral and written English. The recruitment and interview process will take place both in Norwegian and in English. We look for candidates with a high working capacity, with strong skills in both qualitative and quantitative research methods, and who understands that pursuing a PhD is a challenging learning process. The resulting PhD degree will qualify for research and teaching positions at University level.

The appointee will be based at the University of Stavanger, with the exception of a stay abroad at a relevant centre of research.

The salary for this position is set according to the State Salary Code, l.pl 17.515, code 1017, NOK 449.400 per annum. The position provides an automatic membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, which guarantees favourable retirement benefits.
