A permanent position of associate professor in Biological Psychology is available at the Department of Psychology of the Faculty of Health Sciences. The position is affiliated with the research group Behavioral and translational neuroscience, but additional research group affiliations are possible depending on the successful applicants’ scientific profile.

The position is available as soon as the evaluation of candidates, interview, and administrative approvals are obtained, at the earliest during the spring semester of 2019.

The position’s affiliation

The Department of Psychology has nearly 90 employees in total, of which 30 are permanent scientific positions. The department is organized in nine research groups, covering all major fields of psychology. The research group Behavioural and translational neuroscience currently consists of one associate professor (group leader), a research engineer, a postdoctoral fellow, and a PhD student.

The department of psychology is responsible for the professional psychology programme, the bachelor- and master programmes and the one-year introductory programme in psychology (teaching over 900 students). At a PhD-student level, the Faculty of Health Sciences offers a PhD program in health sciences, and access to the Norwegian Research School in Neuroscience (NRSN).

Responsibilities

The department seeks an ambitious, enthusiastic and social person with an impressive, strong and documented background in biological psychology/behavioral neuroscience. We are looking for a candidate who can plan, implement and further develop both research and education in biological psychology. Active participation in all education programs (bachelor, master, and professional track) is required. Our ideal candidate would therefore be highly motivated to invest in developing new courses and to promote the field of biological psychology / behavioral neuroscience in Tromsø, Norway and abroad.

Conducting high quality research is an important part of this position as associate professor. The department seeks an established researcher (preferably > 5 years post-PhD research experience) with expertise in animal and/or human research in biological psychology/behavioral neuroscience. Besides an impressive peer-reviewed track record, our ideal candidate will also bring in new, cutting edge research methods in biological psychology/behavioral neuroscience which complement current research in the research group of behavioural and translational neuroscience, as well as the department.

Required qualifications

For the position of Associate Professor, a Norwegian doctorate degree is required in the subject area in question, or a corresponding international doctorate degree, which is recognized as being equal to the Norwegian doctorate degree, or competence at an equivalent level documented through academic work of an equivalent scope and quality.

The department seeks an established researcher (preferably >5 years post-PhD research experience) with expertise in animal and/or human research in biological psychology/behavioral neuroscience.

For a permanent position as Associate Professor, the following documentation will be considered as important:

- Independent research after PhD

- A strong international peer-reviewed track record

- Experience with (successful) obtaining external research funding

- Experience leading a research team

- Experience with supervising PhD students.

- Completed stays abroad and has national/international research networks.

- Pedagogical qualifications

Independent research after the PhD can be documented with scientific publications without Ph.D –as co-authors.Experience with application for external research funding means that the applicant can show independent application work. International mobility will be assessed according to duration / number of stays and whether the stay has led to scientific publications and/or joint applications for external research funding.Scientific cooperation, nationally and/or internationally, should be documented through joint publications and/or application work.

All teaching and research positions at UiT require documented pedagogical qualifications, in the form of an approved teaching portfolio.

Language skills:

The applicant should be fluent in English. In addition, if the applicant is not fluent in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language at the time of application, (s)he must be willing to learn Norwegian within two years of employment.

The assessment

The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The committee’s mandate is to undertake an assessment of the applicants’ qualifications based on the application documents and the text of the announcement.

Selected applicants will be invited to present a trial lecture and interview. The interview committee’s evaluation of teaching skills and personal abilities will be given considerable weight. Personal ambition, independence, good interpersonal skills, ability to inspire, scientific and educational creativity, and motivation to make a scientific and educational effort for the department and the university are prioritized.

In the event that there are no suitably qualified applicants for the position, an interim appointment for a period of no more than three years may be made, cf. section 6-5 (1) of the Act relating to universities and university colleges. Applications for a permanent position with a new assessment must be made before the three-year period elapses. The appointment will become permanent in the event that the applicant is then found to be suitably qualified.

In the event of an interim appointment on the basis of lacking teaching qualifications, the applicant must, over the course of the three-year period, gain approved teaching qualifications through the development of a teaching portfolio. The appointment will become permanent in the event that the applicant is then found to be suitably qualified.

Working and payment conditions

The successful candidate is obliged to make a contribution to the teaching of all students at the Faculty of Health Sciences as and where necessary, to comply with the teaching guidelines and also to take part in examinations work, without specific compensation.

The successful candidate must also be willing to get involved in the ongoing development of their department and the university as a whole.

The distribution of time between teaching and research responsibilities is flexible and is assigned on an individual basis. For all academic staff, 5% of one’s working hours are set aside for administrative tasks as standard. Thereafter, the main rule for the distribution of working hours for associate professor is 50% devoted to research and 50% to teaching, after time spent on other tasks has been deducted.

Any time-restricting deviations from the standard working hours shall also be described.

The remuneration for Associate Professors is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1011.

A compulsory contribution of 2% to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.
