The aim of the proposed PhD project is to study the microbial composition of the equine gastrointestinal tract (GIT) in healthy and disease states. The focus will be to annotate and characterize the function and diversity of GIT microbial communities, and identify changes in microbial composition in relation to factors such as diet, biochar, age, gender, breed and social interaction with other horses. This will be done using several NGS platforms to compare and find the best methods for identification of the taxonomy and the function of the members of the GIT microbiome.

The following research questions are proposed:

  • Identifying the microbiota of the Equidae in Southern Norway
  • How does the microbiota in the GIT of Equidae change during the seasons?
  • What microbial composition in the Equine hind gut is associated with healthy and disease states?
  • How does different factors, such as age, gender, diet and addition of supplements affect the microbial composition in the Equine gut?

Publication of research results in international peer-reviewed journals is expected.
